NMC Approves 100 MBBS Seats for Odisha's Sundargarh Medical College for Session 2022-23


New Delhi: National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its approval for 100 MBBS admission seats for Odisha’s newly constructed Government Medical College (GMC) located in Sundargarh district for the academic session of 2022-23.

As per the NMC officials, the approval was conveyed to the Dean of Government Medical College, Sundargarh on August 18, 2022, through an official letter signed by the Member/President of Medical Rating and Assessment Board (MRAB), Undergraduate Section. 

Informing about the approval, Parag Gavali, the Collector and DM, Sundargarh officially tweeted, "Happy to inform the National Medical Commission has approved 100 MBBS seats for Govt Medical College Sundargarh, under Sambalpur University".

With this, the Government Medical College in Odisha's Sundargarh district will now function and offer admissions to interested students from the academic year 2022-23. The courses will be offered in line with the government's vision of promoting medical education in the tribal region.

Adding to the statement, Prof. Dr. Daitari Routray, Dean, GMC, Sundargarh informed that as of now, the college is preparing to start the process of admitting students for its very first batch. The selection of applicants for admission seats will be based on NEET UG 2022 scores.

"The required infrastructure is ready at the medical college and hospital. In the meantime, the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH), Sundargarh will be used as the treating hospital,” he added. 

The Government Medical College is fully equipped with advanced classrooms and laboratories in various departments to offer quality education to its students. The college is now working on completing the necessary formalities to start its academic sessions. 

Talking about the highlights of GMC, he added that the medical college of Odisha is spread over 21 acres of area and has the capacity of 500-beds. It is fully equipped with advanced facilities and necessary equipment and laboratories required to start medical courses. 

In addition to this, the college also offers an adequate number of ICU beds, advanced diagnostic labs, modern operation theaters, and its own oxygen plant. It will aim to accommodate over 480 male and female students in each academic session.
