New Delhi: National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 100 MBBS seats for a new government medical college in the Keonjhar district of Odisha. The soon-to-be operational institute of Odisha will aim to boost medical education in tribal communities.

As per the letter shared to college deans on August, 2022, NMC has informed that the Medical Assessment and Rating Board has cleared 100 seats for the health institute that would operate under the Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo University, Baripada.
Earlier, the commission has also approved 100 MBBS seats for Government Medical College in the Sundargarh district of Odisha. This initiative was taken in line with the government's plan to promote medical education in the tribal territory.
Informing about the approval, Sundargarh's Collector and District Magistrate, Parag Gavali, tweeted, "Happy to report the National Medical Commission has authorised 100 MBBS seats for Govt Medical College Sundargarh, under Sambalpur University."
After receiving approval from NMC, the Government Medical College located in Sundargarh district of Odisha will offer admissions to interested students in medical courses beginning from the 2022-23 academic year.
Prof. Dr. Daitari Routray, Dean of GMC, Sundargarh, stated that the institution is currently ready to begin the admissions process for its very first batch of students. The selection of applicants for admission seats will be dependent on their results on the NEET UG 2022.
"Both the medical college and hospital have the necessary infrastructure. In the interim, Sundargarh's District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) would serve as the treating hospital," he said.
To provide its students with an excellent education, the Government Medical College is outfitted with modern classrooms and laboratories in all areas. The institution is currently completing the appropriate procedures to launch its academic year.
Speaking about the advantages of GMC, he noted that the Odisha medical college is situated on 21 acres of land and has 500 beds. It has all of the modern facilities, equipment, and laboratories required to begin medical courses.
In addition, the institution has a sufficient number of intensive care unit beds, comprehensive diagnostic labs, contemporary operating rooms, and an oxygen plant. It will house more than 480 male and female students every academic session.
