New Delhi: After a long delay, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted permission to Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) in Dhanbad to offer 100 MBBS seats for the academic session 2023-24.
The Principal, Dr Jyotiranjan Prasad of SNMMCH Dhanbad confirmed the approval of NMC after receiving a reply from the Apex Medical Commission approving 100 seats for MBBS course for the academic year 2023-2024.
Earlier, the 100 MBBS seats were initially authorised for the college in 2013, but in 2017 the number of seats was cut to 50. The institution has now added 50 more MBBS admission seats to the state's seat matrix, making up for the lost seats it previously had.
NMC, formerly known as the Medical Council of India, had granted permission to raise its admission capacity from 50 to 100 in the 2013-14 session under the provision that the state government fill all open faculty positions within six months.
However, even after eight years since the state's promise, the positions remain unfilled.
In 2014, 2015, and 2016 sessions, the institution continued to accept 100 students, whereas the positions were unfilled. In 2017, NMC again cut the institute's intake capacity to 50.
The NMC team visited the institute four times in 2015, three times in 2016, and twice in each of the following three years: 2017, 2018, and 2019. Each time there was an inspection, it threatened to decertify the institute if the open faculty positions were not filled.
Due to the college administration's disregard for earlier instructions, the NMC had already warned to revoke the medical college's recognition. About 50 MBBS seats are now authorised for the state-owned medical college.
Dr Jyotiranjan Prasad, Medical College's Principal, said, "The credit goes to committed professors, staff, and state government for reclaiming 100 MBBS seats authorization. I will start attempting to get NMC approval for the institution's PG program right away.”
