New Delhi In light of the unforeseen events currently unfolding in Ukraine, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has decided to allow Foreign Medical Students to apply for internships in India. Those who wish to continue with their internship are required to appear for Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE).
As per the official Notification published by NMC, “...It has been further observed that there are also some Foreign Medical Graduates with incomplete internship due to such compelling situation which is beyond their control, such as Pandemic Covid-19 and war etc. Considering the agony & stress faced by these foreign medical graduates, their application to complete the remaining part of the internship in India is considered eligible.”
The notice further requests State Medical Councils to allow candidates who have cleared their FMGE to continue with their internship. NMC has also issued a set of criteria that FMGs need to meet for registration with State Medical Councils.
FMGE 2022: Eligibility Criteria
- The medical degree held by the candidate must be awarded by an approved Institution and registerable for medical practice in that respective country where the degree is awarded. The license must also be at par with the one awarded to the citizen of the country for medical practice.
- Documentary evidence providing proof of successful completion of an internship or physical training during medical qualification equivalent to MBBS
- Copy of Passport and VISA Details
Guidelines for State Medical Councils
According to the notice issued by NMC, a candidate who clears FMGE and also meets the above criteria may be granted provisional registration by State Medical Councils for a 12-month internship or balance period, as the case may be.
Candidates can apply for internships in medical college hospitals or hospitals attached to medical colleges as per this notice.
An additional 7.5% has been allocated in addition to the already permitted seats for internships in Medical colleges for FMGs.
The commission has also stipulated that stipends and other benefits offered to FMGs should be equivalent to facilities extended to Indian Medical Graduates.
FMGE 2022: How to Apply?
Candidates can follow the steps below to apply for FMGE 2022 -
Step 1: Visit the official website (nbe.edu.in).
Step 2: Select the FMGE Tab on top of the page
Step 3: On clicking the tab, a new page will appear. Select ‘Application Link’ on this page to access the online form.
Step 4: Fill up the form, upload the required documents and pay the application fee of Rs 5500.
Documents required for FMGE 2022 include educational certificates and mark sheets, passport size photograph and signature self-attested, copy of passport, ID proof of applicant, copy of primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent degree), Foreign medical degrees attested by the Embassy of India or Apostilled by suitable Foreign Authority.
