Meghalaya Cabinet Approves Proposal for 12 New Degree Colleges: Read Details Here


New Delhi: The proposal to establish 12 new degree colleges in the state of Meghalaya was accepted by the cabinet on Tuesday. The declaration is made months before the Meghalayan assembly elections. The state is scheduled to hold elections early in 2019.

Conrad K. Sangma, the chief minister, gave a press conference following the cabinet meeting and said that the cabinet had also adopted an ordinance renaming Capt. Williamson Sangma Technical University Capt. Williamson Sangma State University. It is Meghalaya's first public university. The plan to begin BA and BCom programmes at the Tura College of Teacher Education received approval from the cabinet as well.

According to Sangma, this was accomplished in accordance with the New Education Policy (NEP), which mandates that colleges offer courses in many disciplines. Additionally, the government approved 47 new posts for the College of Architecture and Planning Tura and 50 new positions for the Shillong Government College of Engineering (SGCE) (CAPT).

Sangma said that both colleges' infrastructures were 99.9% complete and that the government will invest Rs 2.8 crore for SGCE and Rs 2.7 crore for CAPT each year. He stated that by the middle of the following year, the colleges should begin their first session. The Meghalaya Medical Services Recruitment Board will be able to fill open positions through recruitment examinations thanks to a modification to the Meghalaya Health Services Rules that was also approved by the state cabinet.

According to Sangma, the cabinet also authorised a compensation programme for inmates who pass away while awaiting trial, in compliance with the National Human Rights Commission's directive (NHRC).
