Medical Counselling Committee to Conduct Special Stray Vacancy Round for MBBS

New Delhi: The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) under the Directorate General of Health Services will conduct a "special stray vacancy round" to ensure that the vacant seats do not go to waste. Around 323 undergraduate medical seats in state-owned colleges, central universities, and central institutes are still vacant after four rounds of counselling.

There are at least 41 empty seats in Tamil Nadu, including 28 at state-owned colleges and 13 in AIIMS Madurai. While 39 MBBS seats available in Maharashtra, 29 in Bihar, 23 in UP, 21 in West Bengal, and 20 each in Puducherry and Rajasthan.

As per the official notice, students must pay a refundable deposit of Rs 50,000 to participate in the round, however, those who do not enrol in universities after being assigned a seat must forfeit the fee.

Only pre-registered applicants who have not been assigned a seat through AIQ or state quota are able to take part in the stray vacancy round. Students will be required to guarantee that they did not hold a seat in the previous rounds and that they would join the assigned college or forfeit the deposit. Candidates will have to re-select their options for the special round.

The committee has also excluded applicants who were allocated a seat in the previous AIQ mop-up and stray vacancy rounds but did not accept the assigned seats from participating in the special stray vacancy round.

Meanwhile, several medical aspirants and their parents are opposing the Medical Counselling Committee’s (MCC) decision to hold a special stray vacancy round to fill the vacant seats in the all-India quota, without giving them a chance to upgrade.

Recently, Maharashtra's state admission rounds for MBBS seats ended with just one vacant MBBS seat and 198 in dental colleges. According to records, for the last two years, 852 and 1028 seats were vacant in private dental colleges but the vacancies decreased this year, indicating a rise in demand.
