Maharashtra Plans to Provide Medical Education in Marathi

New Delhi: The Maharashtra state government intends to start offering medical instruction in Marathi in the following academic year. According to Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan, medical education in marathi would benefit students from the state's rural areas.

A board for the adaptation of the curriculum has been established by the government. The board will take into account all potential challenges and obstacles when translating the curriculum into Marathi and make recommendations for solutions.

Maharashtra government is planning to introduce medical education in marathi after the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh announced to introduce medical education syllabus in Hindi.

Maharashtra intends for all professional training to be offered in Marathi.

"We intend to provide Marathi as a choice for various fields, including ayurveda, homoeopathy, dentistry, and even nursing. The first state to provide a Marathi curriculum for all of these streams is Maharashtra. We have established committees to investigate the strategy and the required actions. The Marathi curriculum will ease the transition to English for kids who have studied in Marathi mediums,” he said.

The chief minister's office officials claim that they also intend to offer all professional courses in Marathi. "In accordance with central government policy, the curriculum is made available in the regional languages. The state cabinet has examined it last month and the decision of forming a board for the conversion of all these syllabi has been taken. The board will think through all potential problems and obstacles when translating the curriculum into Marathi and offer solutions. On the board, there will be specialists from several sectors,” the person added.

The state government's choice, however, hasn't healed the division within the medical community. Medical education should either be taught in Hindi or continue to be taught in English, according to Dr. Pravin Shingare, a former director of the directorate of medical education and research (DMER) in Maharashtra. "A Marathi-speaking medical student might not be able to work as a doctor outside of Maharashtra/India. The majority of the cities are metropolitan, even within Maharashtra. According to reports, doctors from Maharashtra are the finest in terms of skill,” he said.
