New Delhi: Maharashtra Government has decided to offer a complete fee waiver to students who lost their parents due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With this, the state government aims to ensure that students are not deprived of education due to financial constraints.

Informing about the decision, Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Chandrakant Patil stated that this step has been taken to offer support to those students who have lost their parents to COVID-19. They will be provided with a 100% fee waiver to complete their education.
He informed that this decision will be strictly implemented from this session as these students have every chance to complete their UG and PG level education just like everybody else. Universities and aided colleges will also pay special attention to the education of such students.
Referring to the initiative, Chandrakant Patil said, “The government has decided to waive the entire fee till the completion of the education of the students who have lost their parents during the period so that their graduation and postgraduation education is not left incomplete”.
"It should be strictly implemented this year as well. Keeping in mind the interests of the students, special attention has been given to the universities and aided colleges so that the education of such students is not interrupted" the minister further added.
In an earlier statement, he stated that as many as 931 undergraduates and 228 postgraduate students have lost their parents due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. The students were pursuing their education at various government colleges in the state.
"The government will pay their fees for the entire course," he said. The decision to provide free education to students affected by the COVID-19 pandemic will cost the state exchequer more than INR 2 crore annually.
Last year, Education Minister, Uday Samant also announced the fee waiver for UG and PG students who lost their parents to the pandemic. Students who have lost one or both parents to COVID-19 were provided with a fee waiver until they complete their education.
