New Delhi: Lucknow University (LU) has decided to introduce a master's degree in Avadh Culture (Urdu) from its next academic session.
Formulated as per the National Education Policy (NEP 2020), this LU course at the postgraduate level will be based on everything that represents the rich Awadh culture.
Initially, the seat intake for this course is 60. From attires like ‘do-palli’ caps, tunic, sherwani, wide patch pyjamas of men, heavy embroidery work on women’s clothing to the flavourful Awadhi cuisine including Bakarkhani, Sheermal, Kulcha, Kebab, Biryani- all are included in the curriculum.
The syllabus is soon to be discussed at the board meeting.
“From Qissagoi, the traditional art of storytelling, to writing Shayari to sit on a Dastarkhwan, understanding Sufiana Kalam, attire, food, language, festivities, everything has been included in the syllabus of the course”, as stated by Professor Abbas Raza Nayyar, the Head of the Urdu Department.
Professor Nayyar further commented that the Avadh culture is not just confined within India but is also heavily popular in the world. This course can help the students in studying or researching about the almost lost art forms such as Qissagoi, cuisine and attire, eventually leading them to establish their own business around these.
“They can also contribute to the literature by penning shayaris, poems, and books. We already have junior and senior research fellows who have specialized in Awadh culture and we will also be inviting experts and renowned academicians like Prof Asmat Malihabadi and Ahmad Abbas Rudaulvi for sharing their knowledge with our students,” he added to his statement.
This course is basically a focused attempt by LU at teaching the students the very basis of the Awadhi Culture, its ‘tehzeeb’.
