India's First Forest University to Setup in Telangana

New Delhi: The University of Forestry (UOF) Act, 2022 has received approval from the Telangana Legislative Assembly and Council, paving the path for FCRI (Forest College and Research Institute) Hyderabad to become a full-fledged University of Forestry (UoF).

Mulugu will house the primary campus of the university. FCRI at Mulugu in the Siddipet area was affiliated with Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University. The institution will offer forestry education for the first time in the nation.

Only two nations, namely China and Russia, have universities dedicated to forestry. Telangana will soon house India's first University of Forestry (UOF). In addition to traditional forestry operations, the university aspires to develop agro-forestry models suitable for various agro ecological settings in order to lessen the strain on natural forests, improve economic conditions in agricultural communities, and improve ecological conditions.

An additional 18 programmes, including PhD programmes, diploma and certificate programmes in urban forestry, nursery management, agroforestry, improving tribal livelihoods, forest entrepreneurship, climate-smart forestry, and managing forest parks, have been proposed. The total number of students who will enroll in the programme will be 726, up 360 from the current strength of 366, and the employee strength will be 210, up 92 from the current strength of 118.

The Telangana state Assembly unanimously adopted two additional resolutions on the final day of the Monsoon session urging the center to withdraw the new Electricity Amendment Bill 2022 proposed by the center while keeping in mind the interests of farmers and poorer sections, as well as to name the new Parliament building in New Delhi after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
