IITs, IIMs, NITs Received Over 10% of Centre’s Total Expenditure on Education, Informed Ministry of Education


New Delhi: Ministry of Education informed Rajya Sabha that the IITs, IIMs, NITs, and central universities are among the few institutions that have consistently received more than 10% of the Union government's total expenditure on education from 2016–17 to 2020–21.

According to the statement provided in response to a query posed by Trinamool Congress MP Jawhar Sircar, the contribution of the states in the total spending of the Centre on education has decreased during the session, falling from 22.9% in 2016–17 to 18.8% in 2020–21.

The centre allocated Rs 22,529 crore to the central higher educational institutions in 2020–21, which was 10.10% of Rs 223054 crore, according to information provided by the Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar. On the other hand, Rs 41,984 crore, or 18.78% of the funds, went to the states.

According to prior allocations, the central higher education institutions received a total of 10.60% of all education funds in 2016–17, 13.80% in 2017–18, 10.36% in 2018–19, 11.04% in 2019–20, and 10.10% in 2020–21, the year the Covid–19 pandemic started.

On the other hand, during the same time period, the centre's funding for states and their educational institutions represented 22.59% of the total allocation in 2016–17, 23.61% in 2017–18, 22.42% in 2018–19 and 2019–20, and 18.78% in 2020–21.

Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar, “While IITs, IIMs, Central Universities, etc (a small number of institutions) receive a steady 10 per cent to 11 per cent of total Central Funding for education, all the States put together received around 22 per cent of central funds".

Adding to the statement, Sarkar said, "We must keep in mind that the cash-strapped states together contributed Rs 5.4 lakh crore, Rs 6.6 lakh crore and Rs 6.96 crore in the last three years for the education sector".
