Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) has received Rs 20 Crore from Ashok Soota’s SKAN Research Trust to sponsor a Chair Professorship, three Faculty Fellowships, creation of a lab, and funding of joint research projects.
SKAN, Scientific Knowledge for Ageing and Neurological Ailments, was launched in April 2021 as a public trust for medical research. SKAN includes Mr. Soota, CEO of Happiest Minds Ltd, IT Industry veteran, IIT Roorkee alumni, who is a chairman and managing trustee of SKAN.
With the amount granted by the Ashok Soota promoted SKAN Medical research trust, the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) will use it for the following:
- Fund an Institute Chair Professorship.
- Fund two new faculty Fellowships, and one Institute Research Fellowship.
- Set up a wet lab in IITR.
- Fund joint medical research projects.
Professor Ajit K Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee stated that this opportunity grants the institute to create joint medical research projects in various fields. IIT Roorkee is very proud to have an alumnus as accomplished as Mr. Soota.
Referring to the same, he further added, "It marks a new chapter in the alumni engagement of IIT Roorkee. Through this gesture, Mr. Soota has also made a beginning in terms of directing private funding to support medical research in India"
"We are proud that our Institute has produced an alumnus as accomplished and innovative as Mr. Soota. We applaud his commitment to giving back to society" he added.
Adding to the statement, Chairman, Managing Trustee for SKAN, Mr. Ashok Soota stated that this opportunity is a way of thanking IIT Roorkee for doing excellent work in various fields.
Thanking Mr. Soota, Mr. BVR Mohan Reddy, Chairman BoG, IIT Roorkee also added ” Mr. Soota’s generous funding will give further momentum to Biological Sciences and Bioengineering research at IIT Roorkee”.
“I am confident that IIT Roorkee will make good use of your funding for research in aging and neurological disorders to make the world a better place to live," he added.
