New Delhi: The "National Intellectual Property Awards 2021 and 2022," sponsored by the Government of India, were given to the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras). The university has been named the best academic institution in India for commercialization, grants, and patent filing.

The Division for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, administers this award. On the grounds of patent applications, grants, and commercialization, the officials choose the winner.
"It is essential to defend intellectual property for any nation to rise to global leadership. The IIT Madras director, V. Kamakoti, stated that this award "has unquestionably spurred IIT Madras to produce and safeguard more and more intellectual property of societal value resulting in Atmanirbhar goods during the Amrit Kal."
In total, 120 patent applications (at least one Indian applicant) were submitted in India in 2021, while 68 were submitted outside. 133 patents, seven abroad, six licensed, five assigned, and 11 commercialized. A total of 133 patents were awarded worldwide.
These honours are given yearly to the top achievers in intellectual property (IP) creation and commercialization, including people, institutions, organizations, and businesses. These accomplishments have strengthened the nation's IP ecosystem and promoted innovation and creativity.
Professor Manu Santhanam, Dean (Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research), IIT Madras, highlighted the institution's efforts to improve IP Filing in a statement, saying: "IIT Madras offers a superb research and development atmosphere, which gets the best out of our researchers (faculty, staff, and students).”
He continued, “The IP Office of IC&SR also offers academic members full help for filing and technology transfer. Our efforts to file patents are aided by having access to appropriate search tools and excellent patent attorneys.
