IIT Madras Sets Up Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems for Research and Teaching Outputs


New Delhi: Department of Humanities and Social Sciences of IIT Madras has recently inaugurated a Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems in collaboration with ICCR on the campus ground. The center will aim to focus on research, teaching output, and public outreach. 

As per IIT Madras, the Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems is launched to support and work on four thematic areas which are Mathematics and Astronomy in India, Architectural Engineering, Vāstu, and Śilpa-śāstra, and Indian Political and Economic Thought.

Aditya Kolachana will work as the Principal Investigator of the center. Other members of center are IIT Madras faculty Prof. Arun Menon, Prof. Manu Santhanam, Prof. Santosh Kumar Sahu, and Prof. Sudarsan Padmanabhan, Prof. Rajesh Kumar, and Prof. Jyotirmaya Tripathy.

The Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems was inaugurated in the presence of Sahasrabuddhe, President, Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), and Shri Kumar Tuhin, Director General, ICCR as a part of academic collaboration. 

IIT Madras Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems: Key Highlights

Talking about the key highlights of IIT Madras Center, the officials informed that the center will be facilitated on the institute's campus ground and will be funded by the Indian Knowledge Systems Division of the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

Some of the major highlights of IIT Madras Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems are as mentioned below: 

  • Publish quality research related to Indian Knowledge Systems.
  • Collaborations with outside scholars and institutions.
  • Design and offer courses related to the thematic areas to participants. 
  • Courses will be offered through the NPTEL platform to interested students. 
  • Host workshops to familiarise school teachers and students with various aspects of Indian Knowledge Systems. 
  • Reach out to the public via popular writings, social media posts, etc.

Addressing the inauguration event, Shri Kumar Tuhin stated that under this collaboration, CIKS of IIT Madras and ICCR will work together to create awareness among national and international audiences regarding the rich culture and heritage of India. 

Sahasrabuddhe added that to create awareness regarding India's culture, there is a need to understand India’s contribution to the world in the fields of science, technology, architecture, linguistics, arts, culture, economics, and politics, among other areas.
