IIT Madras Launches M.Tech in Industrial AI; JEE Advanced, GATE Not Required


New Delhi: IIT Madras has introduced a new course, M.Tech in Industrial Artificial Intelligence (AI). Candidates are not required to appear for any entrance examination such as JEE Advanced or GATE to qualify for this course.

IIT Madras has designed the course in consultation with TCS. The first cohort of students will be from TCS, only. According to Professor V Kamakoti, Director at IIT Madras, this course will include both theoretical and practical, lab-based courses covering major topics in Data Science and AI. 

“Theoretical courses will cover concepts in fundamental mathematical techniques required for understanding data science algorithms, time series analysis, multivariate Data Analysis, machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning”, as stated by the Director.

IIT Madras M.Tech in Industrial AI: Course Structure

As per the course design, this M.Tech course might include the following structures:

  • Online lectures via digital lecture rooms (25-30 hours per week)
  • A mid-term 
  • A final examination (Online)
  • Project Work

“Applied courses will describe implementations of AI solutions for industrial problems in a case study format. Put together, these courses are expected to provide a strong theoretical foundation and significant application perspective to the participants in the course”, further added by the Director.

While discussing this course, Professor Prathap Haridoss, Dean (Academic Courses), IIT Madras has explained that this course aims to fulfil the requirement of bringing more well-trained human resources in the field of AI for the sake of industrial development. 

Mr. Ok Ananth Krishnan, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, TCS also commented on this collaboration and stated that this collaboration attempts at providing a deeper understanding of AI and Data Science to the learners. This is to enhance multiple innovations in the industry.

According to Mr. Regu Ayyaswamy, Senior Vice President and Global Head, IoT & Digital Engineering, TCS, Industrial Analytics depends on the combination of Data Science and Physics. 

It is becoming vital for manufacturers who are transforming with Digital Twins to Neural Manufacturing that will maximise efficiency, improve flexibility and predict the outcomes”, as explained by Mr. Ayyaswamy. 

The collaboration, therefore, is planning to shape this course to accelerate the inevitable adoption of industrial analytics at scale.
