IIT Madras Launches AquaMAP Water Management and Policy Centre


New Delhi: IIT Madras has recently launched AquaMAP Water Management and Policy Centre and its website. The Centre was inaugurated by K Vijay Raghavan, principal Scientific Adviser India, and V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras. 

Other notable individuals who were present during the ceremony at IIT Madras include Ligy Philip, Faculty Coordinator of AquaMAP, P Balasubramanian, CEO, Theme Work Analytics, IIT Madras Alumni and Krishnan Narayanan, President, itihaasa Research & Digital and IIT Madras Alumni Association.

Commenting on the need for AquaMAP, Raghavan said, “Our world faces the consequences of climate change and the pressure on biodiversity. Thus, renewing our air, water, and land and pressing sustainable development to become important.” 

He also added that water consumption is highest in the agricultural sector. Hence, one of the main focuses of AquaMAP is improving the efficiency of use of water by the Agricultural sector.

IIT Madras AquaMAP Centre to Solve Water Challenges

The primary aim of the AquaMAP centre is to provide suitable solutions to challenging water problems by designing and evolving smart and optimal water management practices. The centre will also be in charge of the on-field implementation of the water management techniques and technologies at different locations in the country. 

IIT Madras is also collaborating with IIT Dharwad to work on ‘Data Science for Water Security and Agriculture Sustenance’. AquaMAP will also work on identifying some of the biggest challenges in wastewater management and set up a top of the line hydro-informatics laboratory.

Ligy Philip, the Faculty coordinator at AquaMAP, announced the first three projects of the centre and said, “We have a multi-disciplinary faculty team from departments of Chemistry, Civil, Chemical and Humanities, supporting me at AquaMAP. We also have a fantastic set of water experts counselling us in our governing and advisory board.”
