New Delhi: IIT Madras has collaborated with the Indian Air Force (IAF) to develop indigenous solutions to maintain various weapon systems. The MoU was signed on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at an Air Force Station in Delhi.
Under this collaboration, IIT Madras will offer support and researchers to work on various feasibility studies and for the development of various weapon systems. This step will contribute to the indigenization efforts of the Base Repair Depots (BRDs), IAF.
In addition to the development and maintenance of the weapon system, IIT Madras researchers will work together with Base Repair Depots (BRDs) of the IAF's Maintenance Command to enhance sustenance capability, obsolescence management, and achieving self-reliance.
Talking about the initiative, Indian Air Force (IAF) officials said, "Under the ambit of the MoU, the IAF has identified key focus areas involving technology development and finding indigenous solutions towards the sustenance of various weapon systems".
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Air Commodore S Bahuja, Command Engineering Officer (Systems), Headquarters Maintenance Command, IAF, and Professor H S N Murthy, Head of Department Aerospace Engineering, IIT Madras.
Earlier, IIT Madras collaborated with General Electric (GE) to set up an "Expanded Gas Turbine Combustor Testing Facility" at the National Center for Combustion Research and Development (NCCRD).
Under the collaboration with General Electric, GE, the researchers of IIT Madras will receive support and assistance in various ongoing pressure combustion research projects. The collaboration was done in the presence of Alok Nanda, CEO of GE India Technology Center and CTO - of GE South Asia and IIT Madras officials.
Talking about the collaboration, IIT Madras informed that the "Expanded Gas Turbine Combustor Testing Facility" will be the first such facility established in an academic institution globally.
