New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology, Madras was chosen by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, to advance women in STEM (Science, Technology Engineering, and Mathematics).
According to Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, “DST’s initiatives are very important and aligned with the overarching objectives of IIT Madras. IITM will support the GATI initiative fully.”
To this end, a GATI self-assessment team (GSAT) has been set up at IIT Madras with representatives from every interested party at the institute.
The committee is headed by the Nodal Officer Prof. Preeti Aghalayam, Faculty, Department of Chemical Engineering. Prof. Anindita Sahoo, Prof. Himanshu Sinha, Ms Richu George Philip and Mr Vijay Shankar is also a part of the committee.
Department of Science and Technology has collaborated with several British institutions to create an enabling environment for equal participation of women at all levels while addressing deep-rooted problems.
With this Partnership, Project GATI aims to envisage a fresh perspective on not just measures for increasing retention and recruitment but the progression of women throughout their professional journey.
However, the main aim of this project is to develop a country’s first National Assessment and Accreditation Model for S&T institutes, focusing on gender-sensitive practices. Dr Prof. Pratibha Jolly, Former Principal, Miranda House, Delhi, and her team are also working on a framework for valuation and assessment method of institutional gender climate.
