IIT Madras B.Sc in Data Science Gets Maximum Applications from Tamil Nadu

New Delhi: As per reports, Tamil Nadu has topped the country with maximum number of students applying for IIT Madras’s newly launched B.Sc Data Science and Programming course.

As per IIT Madras, the institute has designed the new course with the aim to reach out to students belonging to rural areas and economically backward classes. Such students often do not have the opportunity to take national entrance exams like JEE Main and pursue courses from IITs.

Over 200 students who have passed from government and government-aided schools in Tamil Nadu are pursuing the course. A student from Cuddalore says, “The scholarships offered for students from low-income families has helped me pursue my dreams.”

“Tamil transcripts of the video lectures will also be made available to overcome any potential language barrier. Our aim is to reach out to at least 25% of the villages in the next three years,” IIT-M Director V Kamakoti said.

IIT Madras has launched the B.Sc in Data Science and Programming Course in the month of April. The program will be offered in online mode. The institute will also offer 50% fee reduction to the economically weaker, students with disabilities, and socially deprived students.

As per the Director of IIT Madras, even though the course is offered online, there will be scope for interactions with faculty. Students will have to take offline exams at dedicated centres. The course is also flexible as students can opt for any of the multiple exits to earn a certificate, a diploma or a degree.

As a fact, students in Classes XI/XII, working professionals, and even college students taking a career break can apply. The registration window is now open for IIT Madras Admission 2022 and the last date to apply is April 20, 2022.

Till now, IIT Madras has received approximately 60,000 applications for admission in B.Sc in Data Science. 12000 students have already taken the course and out of them 20% are aged between 30-65 years.

As per Kamakoti, “Data is the new oil. We are also exploring the possibilities of extending the BSc programme to BS and then a GATE exam for admission into MTech programmes.”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin said that they are discussing ways to enrol large number of students into the program by providing free training to government aided school students

IIT Madras Admission 2022: Eligibility Criteria

Passed Class 12 irrespective of age or academic background.
Class 11 final exams-appearing students irrespective of their board or stream. Joining will be granted after passing Class 12.
Have studied Mathematics and English in Class 10
