New Delhi: IIT Madras and National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai, are to jointly conduct OCEANS 2022 Conference and Exposition. This is a bi-annual event for global marine researchers, technologists, engineers, students and policymakers.

The event is scheduled to be from February 21 to 24, 2022.

OCEANS is being conducted in India for the very first time, conducted by the Department of Ocean Engineering, IIT Madras, on behalf of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Ocean Engineering Society (IEEEOES) and Marine Technology Society (MTS). The conference is being conducted in hybrid mode.

This event is for the global maritime professionals to learn, innovate and lead in the field of protection and utilisation of the world’s largest natural resource, i.e. oceans.

The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Inspire-Innovate-Sustain’. The delegates are to share their own experiences on topics related to climate change, troubles of weather, global warming, coastal erosion, marine pollution and microplastics via approximately 400 presentations.

During the inaugural session, congratulating both NIOT and IIT Madras for bringing this conference to India, Madhu Nair, the Chairman and MD, Cochin Shipyard Ltd discussed how this conference is relevant.

It is heartening to note that this conference has been dovetailed into 'UN Decade of Ocean events'...The Key Theme of 'Inspire-Innovate-Sustain' is also important for today's generation, which is extremely connected to the environment and speaks clearly about sustainability. Humankind will have to inspire and innovate. We will have to create technologies and solutions that are for the larger good of humankind and the world in a sustainable manner. Ocean mining should not be about exploitation but utilisation”, as stated by Mr Nair.

Speaking on this occasion, Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Chief Executive, IIT Madras Research Park, which is hosting this important event, commented on how oceans are the third important source of energy after solar and wind.

India is surrounded by oceans and will need this third source of energy. We need to figure out how electricity can be generated from a small wave as current technologies only allow for energy generation from large waves. IIT Madras and the IITMRP will be delighted to work with the stakeholders in this area. One of IIT Madras incubated Start-up Planys Technologies is making small underwater vehicles for exploring the ocean and has been doing great work”, as stated by Mr Jhunjhunwala.
