IIT Jammu gets ‘Centre for Essential Skills’


New Delhi: IIT Jammu gets ‘Centre for Essential Skills’ (CES) launched by Principal Secretary, Higher Education & Information Department, Rohit Kansal on March 23, 2022. 

In this event, Rohit Kansal praised the initiative of the IIT Jammu on starting Centre for essential skills and also mentioned that the Centre would provide all the necessary courses like finance, communication, personal and others. He also added that IIT has done a great job in making resources of the center made available to all the institutions of the UT. On this Occasion, Rohit Kansal also said, “committed to supporting institutions like the IIT Jammu and others who are willing to take efforts in improving the employability of our youth.”

Mentioning the studies by Mckinsey and others, Kansal also brought light on the importance of the new world of work, soft skills like communication, empathy and complex decision making. He stated that the higher-order cognitive skills accompanied by soft skills are the benchmark for people looking for jobs. 

According to him, life skills outside of an academic curriculum helps the entrepreneurial potential of the new age generation is booming and strengthening nation-building.

The founding Deans of the institute Professor S.N. Singh, Shiban K. Koul, Anurag Sharma, K.S. Rao, S.K. Gupta, Dinesh K. Pandya, and Devesh Jinwala were the ones who were felicitated in this event for their immense contribution towards the development of the institution by the Chairman of Board of Governors, Shri Sharad Kumar Saraf.

About the Centre for Essential Skills

Manoj Gaur, the director of the IIT said that the Centre for Essential Skills is a digital resource, which will offer various courses on its portal for everyone. The portal will be made live very soon and further information will be available on the IIT Jammu’s official website. 

There would be 2 minor certification courses Transportation Engineering and Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering for students who are not students of IIT Jammu. Soon it will also start 9 more courses for all the students.

 Head of Department Dr Amitash Ojha, in the event also said that the Centre for Essential Skills will present courses across disciplines as well as open-ended (generic) courses. Nevertheless, the CES will also promote courses on Indian languages, culture awareness, Indian arts, music and craft. These courses will be taken up by outstanding local artists, writers, and craft persons.
