New Delhi: IIT Guwahati has established the Chair of the 'Jal Jeevan Mission' for Water Treatment Technology. This JJM mission was launched by PM Narendra Modi on August 15, 2021, with the aim to provide FHTC (Functional Household Tap Connection) to every household by the year 2024.
IIT Guwahati has appointed Prof. Mihir Kumar Purkait, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Guwahati, as the first-ever occupant for this Professor's Chair which will have a time stint of 5 years.
The Ministry of Jal Shakti, Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation, National JJM, New Delhi has established the Jal Jeevan Mission - Professor Chairs in reputed academic institutions, such as IITs/ IIMs/ social sciences academic-cum-research institutions and national institutions so that high-quality empirical and applied research can be performed in the sector of rural drinking water and sanitation.
The main objective of this JJM project is to address sectoral challenges & facilitate the achievements of 'ODF Plus' and 'Har Ghar Jal' in the rural part of India.
Briefing about the JJM Project, Professor Mihir Kumar Purkait, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Guwahati, said, "The Initiatives taken by NJJM will definitely bridge the gap between academic institutions like IIT Guwahati with the State Water and Sanitation, JJM, Rural Water Supply, PHED, PNRD, and the State and District Water and Sanitation Missions of state and or central government."
The expertise gained since the last 22 years on fundamental & applied research on water treatment technologies will be useful to the concerned government authorities to establish a strategy to implement more efficient, economical and sustainable technology beneficial to the society, he added.
The JJM Chair Professor will be working in coordination with the State Water and Sanitation/ Rural Water Supply/ PHE departments and the State/District Water and Sanitation missions. The professor will perform high-quality empirical and applied research in the rural drinking water and sanitation sector, give policy guidance & build partnerships that are aligned to the objective & priority of the Jal Jeevan Mission.
It will mainly focus on capacity building & maintaining a balance between capacity building, academic program, educational activity and research-in-focus areas of the institute. The Chair will also organise a PhD programme and related course work in the selected focus areas.
