Indian Institute of Guwahati (IIT-G) has been the first-ever institution to introduce a course of UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 under B.Tech course curriculum for the batch 2020-21. This course by IIT Guwahati comes with a plethora of opportunities to gather knowledge and understanding regarding sustainability to build a society, making survival easier.
The 2015 meeting of the United Nations General Assembly agreed upon exercising 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These 17 SDGs, focus on holistically eradicating economic issues, inequality and catering to climatic emergencies, globally.
The new course will be compulsorily incorporated in the second year of B.Tech programs to reorient students in the path of sustainable development.
On this occasion, IIT-G director, Prof. TG Sitharaman said, “With only 10 more years remaining to fulfil these objectives, it becomes very vital that the students are taught about the goals of inclusive and sustainable growth and through this course, offered by faculty members from across engineering, science and humanities departments, IIT Guwahati wishes to prepare the students to play leading roles in ‘Transforming the World.”
Owing to multifaceted nature of 17 Sustainable Development Goals, Humanities and Social Sciences Department associated with Bioscience and Bioengineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Design, Physics, Electronics and Electrical Engineering and Chemical Engineering departments. As a fact, B.Tech courses in all these disciplines have to adhere to the new improvement.

Prof. Anamika Barua, Course Coordinator, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati asserted that for the first time faculties of 9 departments of IIT Guwahati will jointly offer a course.
The course also focuses on case studies on gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities, communities etc. It highlights the way financing mechanisms and global funds can be implemented for SDGs through governance and policy tools.
Prof. Vimal Katiyar, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Guwahati, “With this course, IIT Guwahati intends to nurture budding technocrats through sustainable technological practices to achieve an environmentally benign, safe and inclusive industrial ecosystem and foster innovations for the development of a sustainable society.
This course would further embark upon a student’s perception of choosing ecologically accountable employment.”
