New Delhi: IT Gandhinagar is inviting applications for Invention Factory India, for which the interested candidates can apply till March 20, 2022.
Originating in the US, the invention factory India program has been running at IIT Gandhinagar for the past two summers under the name Invent@IITGN.
This year, the program will continue to operate during the summer at IIT Gandhinagar as Invention Factory® @IITGN. It will also run for the first time at IIT Bombay as Invention Factory® @IITB.
Invention Factory India is a six-week summer program, wherein the IIT students from all over India, will work in teams of two, Prototype, Pitch and Patent inventions that each team has conceived of in the program’s first intensive week.

The teams will compete for substantial prize money for the “Best Inventions” as determined by an illustrious panel of judges who select the inventions, with functioning prototypes, that successfully meet an important societal or consumer need.
The team will work on an invention that will be chosen by them, subject only to the approval of the professors and the safety and budgetary constraints.
IIT Gandhinagar Invention Factory India: Who is Eligible?
The invention Factory India program is open to any undergraduate engineering or design student studying at any of the IITs in India.
IIT Gandhinagar Invention Factory India: What will happen if selected?
A total of 40 students chosen from across all IIT’s will be selected to participate in the invention factory program, where 50% of them will be assigned to the Gandhinagar campus.
Whereas the remaining will be assigned to the Bombay campus, based on a number of criteria including geographic diversity and logistics.
If the candidate is chosen for this program, they will have to spend almost seven weeks at IITGN or IITB.
IIT Gandhinagar Invention Factory India: Program Details
The program at IIT Bombay will commence from May 19, to July 1, 2022, whereas, the IIT Gandhinagar will start the program from May 26, to July 8, 2022.
The sessions will start with a few days of orientation, where the participants will learn (or review) basic prototyping skills -- 3D printing, laser cutting, and the use of simple tools. Orientation is followed by the official six-week program.
Participants will have to attend the classes from Monday through Friday, 10 am to 5 pm – but this is the bare minimum.

IIT Gandhinagar Invention Factory India: How to apply?
Interested candidates can apply through the online mode till March 20, 2022. However, it is to be noted that the admissions are competitive,.
Those who are going to apply for the program must submit a video and a brief (500 word maximum!) description of why they would be a good fit for the program.
Candidates should also have to familiarize the type of inventions crafted in the program by watching videos at Inventionfactory.org.
The candidate's online application will be reviewed by Professors Wolf and Lima in the US and faculty members of the Indian Team, who might contact the candidates via Skype or WhatsApp.
Candidates will compete for a first prize of INR 2 Lakhs, a second prize of INR 1 Lakh and a third prize of INR 50,000 for the teams creating the “Best Invention”, “Second Best Invention” and “Third Best Invention.”
It should be noted that there will be two separate sets of prizes at IIT Bombay and IIT Gandhinagar.
The candidates will be judged based upon several factors:
- how well their invention meets a requirement
- How well their prototype, “pitch” to the Judges and their provisional patent application.
Upon successful completion of the program, all the participants will receive a INR 10,000 stipend with a certificate of participation.
