IIT Delhi and Bihar Pollution Control Board(BPCB) have joined hands in introducing GIS(Geographical Information System) based platform aiming at the management of air quality across the state of Bihar.

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed between IIT Delhi and BPCB on August 8,2020 which emphasizes on identifying the sources of PM 2.5 at a very high resolution to help BPCB to take measures accordingly.

Highlights of the Project:

  • The mutual agreement between the two will be helpful in the identification of source and transport of PM 2.5 at a very high resolution.
  • It will be helpful to board in recognising effective mitigation measures.
  • This particular project will help to identify the local hot spot of particulate matter PM 2.5 in the non-attainment cities in Bihar namely Patna, Gaya and Muzaffarpur.
  • This project will be held by IIT Delhi, Associate Professor, Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, Dr Sagnik Dey equivalent to S N Jayaswal of Bihar State Pollution Control Board, Patna.
  •  The mapping will take place at a very high resolution of one square km using satellite and ground-based measurement systems.
  • These maps will be helpful in development and designing of a strategy to minimise exposure through modelling and survey.
  • With the help of satellite data, the study will be helpful in identifying the districts and villages where open burning is prevalent.
  • A detailed air mass trajectory analysis will be carried out to identify the transport path of air pollution to the non-attainment cities.
  •  A weekly pollution build-up can also be examined to identify critical pollution periods.
