IIT Bhubaneswar to Provide 22 Supernumerary Seats for Female Candidates

New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar will allocate 22 supernumerary seats to potential female candidates in an attempt to close the gap between men and women in engineering degrees and provide equitable access to female students.

The additional 22 B.Tech seats (supernumerary) will be given beginning with the 2018-19 academic year. The number of B.Tech seats at IIT Bhubaneswar will grow from 350 to 372 as a result of the addition of 22 supernumerary seats.

Mr. RV Rajendra Kumar, director of IIT Bhubaneswar, said that very few female students enrol in IITs. In an attempt to inspire more women to enrol in IITs, the HRD Ministry has approved 22 more seats for female students under the supernumerary quota. Currently, just 8% of candidates enrolling in B.Tech courses at IIT Bhubaneswar are female, he noted.

The central government recently created a thorough plan to increase the proportion of female students in IITs to 14%. About 6% of the increase will be impacted by the 14% rise in female students at IIT Bhubaneswar.

JEE merit will determine which female candidates are chosen under the supernumerary quota. 22 supernumerary seats will start the admissions process when 350 seats have been filled.

Rank-based admission will be given to female candidates. The top institute further affirmed that adding more seats wouldn't reduce the number of seats available for guys. To draw more women to the top universities, extra seats have been added.

The OBC, SC, and ST reservation policies would be applicable to the 22 extra seats. There is typically no discrimination against female applicants to IITs.

"Even if they are equally strong students, not many girls even contemplate enrolling in IITs for a variety of reasons. The causes are primarily social in nature. Girls perform exceptionally well among current IIT students, "Raja Kumar stated.

Women's rights advocate Namrata Chadha applauded the decision and noted that girls' education is frequently not given priority in many parts of society.

"Parents hesitate when sending girls to coaching centres, but sending guys is commonplace. This is why hardly many girls qualify for the IITs while outperforming guys in boards "Chadha stated.
