IIM Ranchi Introduces ‘Human Library’ to Assist Students Learn from Other’s Experiences

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM Ranchi) has introduced an initiative called "Human Library" to offer people a special chance to have meaningful talks and benefit from one another's experiences.

The event launched by IIM Ranchi brought students, educators, and community people together, so that they could exchange stories and points of view.

The institute has modelled the Human Library after the concept of a traditional library, where users can "borrow" a "book" in the shape of a person and speak with them about their experiences, convictions, and points of view.

According to information, the idea of a "human library" was developed in Denmark in 2000 as a means of fostering tolerance and understanding by enabling people to interact one-on-one with "human books."

These "books" are made up of individuals with lived experiences or identities that are frequently misrepresented, vilified, or misunderstood in the media.

On this occasion, the attendees got the chance to "borrow" and interact with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. There was a specific time allotted for each conversation between "books." The readers had the opportunity to enquire about them in order to learn more about them and the difficulties they faced.

People from a variety of professions, religions, ethnicities, and more were represented at the event as "books," all of whom were eager to share their experiences and have deep discussions with guests. With more than 32 "books" representing many countries, religions, and vocations, the event was a success.

One of the "books" included a student from a tribal group who discussed their problems, experiences, and path to success in each stage of their education and careers.

Another speaker was a staff member who discussed the value of receiving help and support and their own experience with mental illness. Further, another speaker was an entrepreneur who discussed the joys and difficulties of beginning and operating a small business.

IIM Ranchi's counselling cell organised the event to provide a welcoming environment for discussion and learning. In order to gather "human books'' and spread the word about the event in the community, they collaborated with the college library team and teachers.

After studying several models in other countries where this technique is popular, particularly in Nordic countries, Prof. Deepak Kumar Srivastava, Director of IIM Ranchi, conceived the idea and wanted to introduce this to IIM Ranchi to establish a more comprehensive model of student growth and development.
