IIM-Ahmedabad, Bangalore: Gender Disparity Amplifies in the New Batch of 2020

Gender parity is one of the most debatable issues when it comes to admission to premier institutes in India. Several educational boards and authorities are of the belief that strategic approaches can scrap such gender biases and foster diversity in campuses.

Owing to this concern, a recent report suggests, IIM Calcutta, Lucknow and Kozhikode will observe efflux of female qualifiers. As a matter of fact, women face severe gender bias and even neglection at different walks of lives.

On the other hand, IIM Ahmedabad and Bangalore are expecting a dip in the number of female candidates enrolled for MBA, this year. This trend has been observed after comparing enrollments of 2019 and 2020.

New Generation IIMs High on Gender Diversity Scale

A recent report by Economic Times projects increased enrolment of women candidates in IIM Raipur and Kashipur. The scenario is similar even in the IIM Kozhikode, Calcutta and Lucknow.

New IIMs are expected to have drive-in more women applicants. This is because new-gen IIMs are setting up selection guidelines that give increased weightage to women candidates.

The goal is to offer a stable career to women by allowing them to opt for best management courses in the country.

IIMs Face Challenges while Selecting Female Candidates

IIMs have been on the lookout for creating a gender diverse campus, however, latest reports uncover blatant truths.

Data from past years reveal that number of women applicants has remained consistent. Despite this, the share of the final qualifiers is comparatively less.

In 2020, the percentage of women qualifiers to IIM Ahmedabad is seeing a steep fall. While 23.71% of women qualified in 2019, only 21.7% of women made it this year.

On this, Errol D’Souza, Director of IIM Ahmedabad, said that the institute does not reserve seats or owe additional credits for enrolling female candidates. As a result, the goal to achieve gender diversity seems far-flung.

IIM Bangalore Witnessing Positive Trends

Amid all the attempts to meet gender diversity goals, IIM Bangalore is showcasing positive trends considering the number of female qualifiers in the new batch.

Considering all the older IIMs, IIM Bangalore faired well in terms of gender parity. It is observing an increased rate of female students in the forthcoming academic session.

However, the institute has not modified any of its selection criteria in the past 3 years. Thus, it proves, their candidature has been guaranteed solely through academic performance.

The current scenario has grabbed the attention of IIM authorities, for a fact that female applicants in CAT been consistent in the past 3 years.

Along with all the newer campuses, IIM Calcutta has also altered its admission policy giving exclusive credibility for female candidates from shortlisting phase.

The IIMs always uphold a distinct belief in maintaining a holistic approach to create future leaders out of their students and create an international footprint.
