IIIT Delhi: Center of Excellence on Light Fidelity (LiFi) to be Set Up

Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Delhi is all set to launch the Center of Excellence (CoE) on Light Fidelity (LiFi).

The objective of the CoE at IIIT Delhi is to design relevant courses on Light Fidelity (LiFi) and to support research collaborations and the exchange of experts between India and the EU for facilitating capacity building.

The activities under the project will be anchored by TSDSI from India and ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) from the EU. LiFi is communication technology and it uses light to transmit data.

IIIT Delhi stated that CoE aims in developing technology solutions and products which will enhance the last mile connectivity using Visible Light Communication (VLC).

The CoE will also connect the entrepreneurs in India with the academic researchers and standardization bodies. The training and classroom courses on VLC will also be developed by CoE.

IIIT Delhi also stated, “The CoE will also work on the standardization of these technologies, in the context of 5G and beyond, through TSDSI and lead the way for international standardization of 5G VLC based solutions through 3GPP.”

Professor Anand Srivastava, Dr. Vivek Bohara, and Dr. Gourab Ghatak will be driving the CoE. A strong research group on Optical Wireless Communication was lead by them.

Hardware and algorithms for indoor LiFi systems, hybrid RF-VLC systems, and VLC systems for V2V applications were developed by the members of the research group, IIIT Delhi informed.

The government of India has launched a scheme for LED bulb distribution and hence the VLC or LiFi Technology is especially interested in the Indian Context.

The government of India launched the scheme under the domestic efficient lighting program (DELP). India has distributed 15 Million LEDs so far in that view.

In the official statement, IIIT Delhi stated that an efficient development and roll-out of the LiFi technology will augment the internet access capabilities and complement the LED boom in India.
