PM Modi's Vision to Establish 1 Medical College in Each District of India

Several times, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that his government is working towards establishing at least one medical college in each district of the country under a central scheme.

Currently, the state has six government medical colleges (GMC) and a total of eight medical colleges are operated by the Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS). As a result, the state offers 5700 medical seats in all.

According to the latest reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for establishing medical colleges in every district to enable health services.

The five new colleges will be set up in Morbi, Porbandar, Navsari, Godhra and Rajpipla under GMERS from the next academic session, said Dr R Dixit, Additional Director, Directorate of Medical Education and Research (Medical Education), Gandhinagar.

Further, Dr Dixit said that apart from setting up new colleges, Civil Hospital (Asarwa), Gandhinagar Civil Hospital and Sola Civil Hospital will be transformed into super-speciality hospitals, strengthening the health services and medical education in the state.

Due to the problems encountered during the Covid-19 pandemic, a senior health official stated that the Gujarat government is now responsible for the majority of medical education projects.

As per the sources, five more medical colleges are being planned to be established in Botad, Khambhaliya, Veraval, Tapi, and Vyara, in addition to the five new colleges.
