Govt. Approves Continuation of National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme till 2025-26, Changed Eligibility Criteria; Check Details Here


New Delhi: The Ministry of Education (MoE) has approved the continuation of the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMSS) till 2025-26 with minor changes in the eligibility criteria. The prescribed income mark increased from INR 1.5 Lakh to INR 3.5 Lakh per annum, as per the officials stated on Tuesday. 

The primary objective of this NMMS scholarship is to provide financial support to meritorious students of the economically weaker sections so that they don’t abruptly drop out at class 8 and feel encouraged to continue pursuing their secondary education. 

The Government has a proposal to provide scholarships to approximately 14.76 lakh students with a financial plan of INR 1,827.00 crore, as per the scheme. 

The Centre has approved the NMMSS for a five-year-long period, from 2021-22 to 2025-26, with a bit of minor modification in the eligibility criteria as mentioned earlier. 

One lakh fresh scholarships of Rs 12,000 per annum (Rs 1,000 per month) per student are awarded to selected students of class 9 every year and their continuation and renewal in classes 10 to 12 for study in state government, government-aided and local body schools under the scheme,” the Ministry stated in an official statement.

NMMSS: Key Highlights

  • Students are selected for this scholarship through an examination conducted by the State and UT Governments. 
  • The Scholarship scheme is included in the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). 
  • Scholarships are directly disbursed into the bank accounts of the students through electronic transfer. It is done through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) following the DBT model. 
  • The Central Government provides the entire 100% of the fund. 
  • Since the launching of this scholarship in 2008, 22.06 lakh scholarships have been approved till 2020-21 which involve an expenditure of approximately 1,783.03 crores.
