Global Layoffs Speculated to Affect Campus Placements at IITs

New Delhi: The placement of students at Indian Institutes of Technology could be impacted by the global tech downturn (IITs). But compared to other engineering institutes in India, the impact will be minimal, according to The Economic Times.

IITs anticipate a decline in the amount of businesses contacting them for campus placements. The 2021 cohort, however, experienced record placements. Digitization and the post-Covid hiring boom were the driving forces behind it. Unprecedented numbers of packages for more than INR 1 crore, worldwide postings, and other offers were made.

"While the overall picture is unquestionably better than the Covid year, we remain a little apprehensive. According to the study, Sathyan Subbiah, a professor and placements adviser at IIT Madras, there has been a little decline in the number of organisations that have so far participated.

Beginning on December 1, final placements will take place in the former IITs. However, because the businesses will continue to acquire top talent and "keep a relationship with these leading tech universities," the impact on IITs is probably going to be less severe than it would be in other engineering colleges.

According to Abhishek Kumar, director of the Centre for Career Development at IIT Guwahati, "some affected organisations have not confirmed (participation) yet, but they are motivated to join."

PPO growth despite layoffs

Despite widespread layoffs, there has been an increase in pre-placement offers at various IITs this year (PPOs). IIT Guwahati students received 218 PPOs. The institute received 179 offers in total in 2021–2022 Reports state that there are now more non-IT recruiters than ever before.
