New Delhi: The Government in accordance with NMC has declared that there is no provision in law of medical colleges to accommodate the transfer of students pursuing medical degrees from foreign universities to Indian Universities.

NMC has further proposed a one-time relaxation for the final year medical students to complete their practical training in India and sit for FMGE.
Two months ago, West Bengal Govt had allocated seats to 412 medical students from Ukraine to finish their practical training. This was done as a concession for the ongoing Ukraine Crisis.

Now, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Dr Bharti Pravin Pawar has told the Lok Sabha ,“Therefore, no permission has been given by the NMC to transfer or accommodate any foreign medical students in any Indian medical institute or university”.
According to the minister, all admissions to MBBS seats, even the 85% seats under the state quota, should be filled up only according to the ranks of the students in the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET).
Previously officials from NMC had clarified to the media that the council has not made any decisions regarding the special allocation of these students. It was also said that students who manage to complete their foreign medical degrees from Indian Universities will not be eligible to sit for the FMGE Exam.

Foreign Medical Graduate Exam (FMGE) is a graduate skill test examination for medical students who have achieved their degrees from foreign universities. These young doctors must pass the test inorder to achieve the license to practice medicine in India.
After the much conversed crisis due to the pandemic and the Ukrainian war, several Indian students pursuing medical degrees from foreign universities have been left stranded in the middle of their course. Thus, NMC has granted a one time opportunity for the final year students to complete their practical training in India and sit for FMGE. They would however require to complete two years on internship in India in order to get permanent license for practice.
Usually, foreign medical graduates have to complete their training and a one-year internship at the university they are enrolled in order to appear for the FMGE exam in India. They then have to do a one-year long internship in India as well in order to get permanent registration. This proposal is yet to be accepted by the Union Health ministry and the Supreme Court where a case is underway.
