Education Ministry Approves Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) Scheme Till March 2026; Read Details Here


New Delhi: The Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) scheme has been approved by The Ministry of Education (MoE) for continuation till 2026, as per the official statement on Friday.

RUSA is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS), effective for funding the State Government-run universities and colleges to fulfil the goals of equity, access and excellence. 

The proposal includes an expenditure of INR 12,929.16 crore out of which the central share is INR 8,120.97 crore and the state share is INR 4,808.19 crore. Approximately 1600 projects are to be supported under the scheme’s care.

According to a senior ministry official, “The new phase of RUSA targets to reach out the unserved, underserved areas, remote and rural areas, difficult geographies, aspirational districts, tier-2 cities, areas with low GER, to benefit the most disadvantaged areas and SEDGs (Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups)”.

The new phase of the scheme has been designed to implement some of the recommendations and aims of the New Education Policy, which suggests some key changes to the current higher education system to revamp and re-energize it and thereby deliver quality higher education, with equity and inclusion,” the official further added to the statement.

As per the new phase of the particular scheme, state Governments will be supported for gender inclusion, equity initiatives, ICT, enhance employability through vocationalisation and constant skill upgradation. The states will also be supported for creation of several new model degree colleges along with multidisciplinary education and research. 

Grants will be provided for strengthening both accredited and non-accredited universities and colleges for undertaking various activities including teaching-learning in Indian languages,” the official further added to the statement.

  • Improvement of overall quality in the State institutions as per the prescribed norms and standards
  • Transformative reforms in state higher education system along with the creation of a facilitative institutional structure for planning and monitoring, leading towards autonomy and improved governance
  • Reformation in the affiliation, academic and examination systems and availability of good quality faculty
  • Promoted research and innovation and expand the institutional base
  • Setting up of institutions in underserved and unserved areas within the country
  • Equity in higher education, especially among the students of the SC/ST or educationally backward classes along with women, minorities and differently-abled persons
