DU Urges St Stephen's to Abide by its Decision to Conduct Admission Through CUET

Delhi University and Stephens have gone head to head on the matter of holding interviews for all candidates. While DU's Academic Council has decided that all undergraduate admissions, including those to minority institutions, would be based completely on CUET, St Stephen's has said that it will grant 85% weightage to CUET and 15% weightage to interviews.

The registrar wrote to the Principal of St. Stephens stating, “This is with reference to your email dated April 20, 2022, regarding the admission process for the session 2022-23 at St Stephen’s College. In this regard, I am to inform that the admission policy, as approved by the Academic Council of the University of Delhi, is applicable to all colleges (Constituent/ Affiliated) of the University of Delhi.”

“With regard to your college, taking note of the fact that it is a minority institution (for candidates belonging to the Christian community), the university has decided that 50% of open seats shall be filled solely on the basis of merit of CUET score. However, the remaining 50% seats for minority candidates shall be filled on the basis of combined merit of 85% weightage to the CUET score and 15% weightage to the interview to be conducted by St Stephen’s College.”

He further added that there should be a single merit list for candidates from the Christian community, regardless of denominations or sub-categories within the Christian minority population.

When asked what DU would do if Stephens did not comply with the decision, Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh stated, "Our decision is made. They will have to follow it, they have no option. We have taken enough time and consulted educationists and taken legal advice before coming to this decision. We have to protect the larger interest of our students.”

Singh stated that there had been no informal or official discussions with Varghese since the April 20 communication from the college, and the decision was made by DU authorities.

Earlier, in response to Stephen's request for all applicants to be interviewed, DU advised the college that they may do so for minority seats but not for general seats. Varghese, however, stated in a news release on April 20 that they will not change their decision to undertake interviews for admissions to all student categories since there shall be no discrimination between minority and non-minority candidates in this respect.
