DU Accepts Applications from 520 International Students in 2022, a 27.5% Decrease from 2021

New Delhi: Delhi University has admitted a total of 520 foreign students for its undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD courses for this academic session 2022-23, which is a decrease of more than 27.5% from the previous year.

DU Accepts Applications from 520 International Students in 2022, a 27.5% Decrease from 2021

This year, a majority of students that took admissions at DU are from Nepal (110), followed by Tibet (100) and Bangladesh (85). However, a university representative blamed the delayed start of the academic session for the decrease in foreign student admissions.

This year, almost 520 foreign students have been admitted to the university compared to 663 students in 2021. The number of applications from foreign nationals has also dipped this year by over 28 per cent.

According to the latest reports, Professor Amarjiva Lochan, Jt Dean, International Relations said that this year, a total of 7,000 application forms have been submitted by the applicants, whereas the university received over 9,000 applications last year.

This year, the maximum number of applications were from Nepal, while it was from Afghan nationals from the previous year. The admission process started in March and it was concluded in the middle of July.

As many as 1,500 students were selected for admission, out of which, 520 of them have confirmed their admission and are coming to Delhi.

The reports revealed that around 320 students have applied for admission to UG courses, and 50 and 100 students have applied for admission to PG and PhD programmes at DU colleges

According to Lochan, B.Com (Hons), English (Hons), BA Psychology, and BA Computer science courses had received the maximum number of applications.

Foreign nationals may enrol in a variety of academic programmes at the University of Delhi as either self-financing students or those receiving financial aid from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), the Indian government, through one of its numerous scholarship programmes.

Foreign nationals seeking admission to any programme, including undergraduate, graduate, MPhil, and PhD programmes, are excluded from taking the entrance exam. Admission to such candidates would be granted based on a merit list.

The process from ‘Application to Admission’ comprises four broad steps: application, evaluation by the varsity, online admission formalities and formalities after reaching Delhi.

Lochan said that the university has adhered to the tried-and-true procedure. Only their grades have been used to determine admittance and a merit list has been created.

This year, the university permitted all aspirants to list their college preferences.

Adding that colleges in North campus are the most popular among international students, Lochan said that only the top 30 students may previously list their colleges. This year, the varsity has given every student the opportunity to share their preferences for institutions.

The bulk of the colleges on North Campus have dorms, and the majority of their programmes are taught in English, which is why students favour these colleges, remarked Lochan.

When questioned about the decrease in foreign applicants, Lochan responded saying that there have been a number of delays in the academic session this year, resulting in fewer applications.
