Dr. Shahid Jameel is appointed by Ashoka University as Director of the Trivedi School of Biosciences


The renowned virologist will focus on the advancement of research in synthetic biology, infectious diseases, chronic diseases, and other emerging biosciences, and the development of world-class talent in India.

Ashoka University announced the appointment of Dr. Shahid Jameel as Director of the Trivedi School of Biosciences. The School was launched earlier this year with over 100 crore donations from Ashok Trivedi, Founder and Trustee,

Ashoka University and Managing Partner of SWAT Capital. He will join the University on October 1st, 2020.

After spending more than seven years as CEO of the DBT / Wellcome Trust India Alliance, a public charity that funds biomedical research, Dr. Jameel goes to Ashoka University.

Prior to that, he had been the leader of the Virology Group at the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in New Delhi for more than 25 years, researching human viruses.

Dr. Jameel was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for Medical Sciences. He is also a Fellow at the Indian National Academy of Sciences, the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Academy of Sciences.

Commenting on his appointment, Dr. Jameel said, "I am pleased to join the Trivedi School of Biosciences at Ashoka University and look forward to building a robust program to address key scientific challenges. High-quality scientific research, in particular health research, is needed that connects seamlessly with society, with an emphasis on liberal education and its strengths in the field of naturopathy.”

Prof Shashidhara, Dean (Research) of Ashoka University, said, "I am excited that Dr Shahid will join Ashoka and lead the newly established Trivedi School of Biosciences. I am confident that he will be able to attract the best minds to Ashoka and train them to pursue great science to produce a high degree of societal impact.

Ashoka University, led by Malabika Sarkar and LS Shashidhara, has begun its global search for a new faculty. It envisages that the Biosciences Initiative will be the cornerstone of its Natural Sciences Program. The Advisory Board of the Trivedi School of Biosciences is composed of the Nobel Prize winners Venki Ramakrishnan and Jack Szostack. It aims to have more than 30 bioscience faculties and 100 PhD students by 2025. The physical infrastructure is expected to be ready by December 2021.
