Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to Inaugurate Kalpana Chawla Space Research Centre at Chandigarh University on Jan 3, 2022; Check Details Here


New Delhi: Union Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh will inaugurate Kalpana Chawla Centre for Research in Space Science & Technology (KCCRSST) at Chandigarh University, Gharuan on January 3, 2022. 

Satnam Singh Sandhu, the Chancellor of Chandigarh University, referred to this initiative by the university as a giant leap towards the development of astronomical knowledge and remembering the first woman astronaut of India to go into outer space. 

This virtual inauguration session of the Chandigarh University's Student Satellite (CUSAT) was attended by many distinguished professionals and scientists such as Dr Y S Rajan, a scientist at the Indian Space Research Organisation or ISRO, R M Vasagam, the former ISRO Director, Dr Mylswamy Annadurai, Program Director of Chandrayaan 1 and Mangalyaan and also known as the Moon Man of India.

Chandigarh University Kalpana Chawla Space Research Centre: Inauguration Event Highlights

Established to provide sufficient training to the students in the field of Space Science and Satellite Development, this research centre is to be the earth station for CUSAT or the Chandigarh University’s Student Satellite, a nano-satellite technology designed by the university students. 

The university is to further design a multipurpose nano-satellite device in the upcoming 10-12 months which will be launched by the ISRO.

According to S. Sandhu Chancellor, Chandigarh University, said, “This centre will help in developing satellite research facilities and launching satellites in countries which have not yet developed satellite technology. It will not only help in the design, development and research of satellites but will also play a vital role in preparing space scientists and emerging professionals of the future.” 

With the launching of the space research centre, Punjab will become the very first border state in India to own its own satellite in space. It will be among the 75 satellites built by the students being launched into space on the 75th Independence Day eve, 2022. 

Chandigarh University has joined the list of 13 famous institutes like IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur and became the first North Indian University to design its own satellite. This event is to be of greater significance as it is supposed to collect data related to fields of agriculture, weather forecast, natural disaster, border intrusion, etc. 

Chandigarh University is a famous non-profit university, accredited with an A+ grade by NAAC. The university has more than 13000 students and 16 departments. The university offers several UG, PG and PhD courses. Students can seek admission to the university on the basis of their CUSAT examination score.
