CUET Mandatory for Central University UG Admissions from 2022: UGC Chairman


New Delhi: UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar announced that the central universities will have to use the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores for admission to their UG programmes this year. 

As per the announcement made on Monday, March 21, 2022, the Class 12 marks are not to be considered anymore.

The Chairman also stated, CUET will most likely be conducted during the first week of July. Later, a public notice by UGC said that the application process for CUET will begin during the first week of April. 

“From the 2022-23 academic year, the National Testing Agency will be conducting the CUET for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. All the central universities will have to consider CUET scores for admissions to their programmes,” as stated by the Chairman.

UGC Notice Regarding CUET: Key Highlights

There are 45 central universities that are funded by the UGC and are asked to use the CUET scores for UG admission. Below mentioned are the few key highlights of the main notice:

  • CUET Syllabus is to be aligned with the Class 12 model syllabus, prescribed by the NCERT.
  • CUET will include Section 1A, 1B, general test and some domain specific subjects. Section 1A will be compulsory and available in 13 languages so that candidates can write the paper in any of their chosen languages. The options include English, Bengali, Hindi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Odia, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Punjabi, Telugu and Urdu.

  • Section 1B is optional and for those who want to opt for another language apart from the ones from Section 1A. These languages can be French, Arabic, German, etc. 
  • In the case of the domain-specific papers, candidates can select up to a maximum of 6 domains that they want to pursue at the UG level. Anthropology, Accounting, and Book-keeping are some of the options. 
  • CUET will not impact the specific reservation policy of the universities. 

“The universities can enrol candidates for the general seats as well as for the reserved seats on the basis of CUET scores. It will not impact the existing admission and reservation policy that are in accordance with the Ordinances of the varsity,”, Kumar further added. 

Central Universities such as Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) generally reserve half of the seats for the minority group students. These universities are yet to announce their decisions regarding CUET. 

As per the officials from both the universities, they will take the decision after receiving any official communication from the UGC. They have, however, already formed a committee to discuss the notice by the UGC. 

Foreign students can be admitted to the universities as per the existing guidelines. The universities will also be allowed to conduct practical exams and interviews for courses such as Music, Fine Arts, Theatre, in addition to CUET. After CUET, the universities are to follow their own counselling process.

About CUET Exam 2022

CUET exams will be conducted in two shifts. The exam is also supposed to reduce the financial burden of the students as the candidates have to appear for only one exam. Along with the central ones, the state, private and deemed to be universities can also use this exam score. 

Delhi University and some other institutes have already made the announcement that they will consider CUET scores only during the time of admission. The NTA will release detailed guidelines regarding the CUET exam soon.
