Dr. Shobha Rani is presently serving as Vice-Principal at Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, Hyderabad. She has a vast industrial and teaching experience of about 22 years in reputed institutes and colleges all over the country, and has been principal investigator for two research projects funded by the Department of Science and Technology and AICTE. She has to her credit a number of research papers in journals and international conferences indexed by Scopus, web of science SCI, and is an active member of various professional societies like IEEE, ISTE and IETE.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“Remaining updated with students needs”

Right now students are inclining more towards advent courses like AI, cyber security, data science, machine learning and robotics. The latest industrial revolution 4.0 has forced the students to aspire to new technologies and new challenges. Staying connected to the present generation, molding the future generation in advanced technologies and providing life skills are the key factors. I customize my educational approach depending on each student’s needs. For this purpose, courses are designed differently. 


How are the education systems in India and abroad structured differently?

“Conceptualization of subject knowledge”

Indian education system has been developed on the pillars that support thorough theoretical knowledge and prepare the students for some of the toughest competitive exams in the world. Whereas education systems of foreign countries are more flexible allowing students to pursue varied career opportunities other than the mainstream options.

How do you strategize the International affairs of your institute?

“Collaborations in diverse aspects of academics”

The office of International Affairs came into existence in 2018 and acts as a bridge between the Institute of Aeronautical Engineering and the world. Since its inception, I visited various renowned international universities and could succeed in getting MoU’s with 12 premiere universities in about 9 countries for various collaborative activities including faculty as well as student exchange programs, joint research programs, symposia, workshops, internships, etc. I educate and train the students and faculty to understand the benefits of international exposure. The students and faculty could consequently submit joint research proposals under bi-lateral and multilateral research programs of the Government of India such as Indo- Thailand, Indo-Israel, Indo-German and Indo-ASEAN. They also published collaborative research articles in various conferences and journals indexed by Web of Science and Scopus.


How does the academic structure of IARE ensure the best practice of industry?

“Studying the courses at an accelerated pace with industry training or internship”

The present-day job market poses fresh challenges that need to be managed innovatively. At IARE, various strategies are implemented to acquire skill sets required for students' successful careers. We offer courses dedicated to student skills, integrating student-skill-focused activities into regular curricular offerings, and engaging students in research and internship experiences. Also the autonomous status we implement is more responsive to the needs of the industry. As a result, there is a lot of scope for industry oriented skill development built-in into the system. Moreover, students could spend one full semester in an identified industry, R&D organization or an academic University where sufficient facilities exist to carry out the project work. Students have utilized the opportunity, thus achieving good placement in reputed industries. Hence the graduates from our institute have therefore better employability.


How important is diversified knowledge for the students in the long run?

“Adapting to different situations and different cultures”

Having diversified knowledge of various cultures and people around the world is an important life skill for all the students. International exposure gives the students a fantastic opportunity to travel and explore other cultures as well as lifestyle while expanding their knowledge. It also stimulates stronger research aptitude with collaborative publications. The students grow professionally via knowledge sharing while promoting intercultural understanding. Students can overcome their introversions with diversified knowledge. IARE has active partnerships with many foreign universities towards promoting research collaborations, and student as well as faculty exchange. These provide scope to the students for further education in global universities as well. Students get a fantastic opportunity to travel, learn and work in different places through our global internship, work-placement programs and participation in international competitions/conferences/events. 


How important is it to have updated subjects for the students?

“Increment in overall scope of opportunities”

We work with our community, business partners and industry experts to develop course content that meets the needs of employers as well as the jobs of the future and respond to the challenges of a global workplace. Along with emerging courses and programs like AI, Machine Learning, Cyber security and Data Science, we also offer honours and minors courses to the students to enable them to pursue allied academic interest in contemporary areas. These courses provide an opportunity to students to become entrepreneurs and leaders by taking a business or management minor. Combination in the diverse fields of engineering increases placement prospects in various multinational and designing companies. Students get an opportunity to pursue higher studies and research in interdisciplinary areas as well. Regardless of the approaches used, we also assess student skills and adjust the curriculum as needed to maximize their development and turn them into professionals.

What would you like people to know about your Institute they may not?

At IARE, starting with the admin faculty, teaching faculty, R & D faculty, we all thrive for the students' success. We offer a supportive, well-equipped and creative environment to help the students. Challenges, competition and the fear of failure are natural, but success embraces those who face these with the can-do attitude.
