Dr. Monalisha Saikia Borah is the Head of Bioscience Department in the Asian Institute of Management and Technology, Guwahati. She has been honored with a Ph.D. degree (Medical Biotechnology) for completing her thesis ‘A study of Haemoglobinopathies, thalassemia and beta-thalassemia mutation patterns in Northeast India.’ She has experience of 10+ years in both Research and Training Including AIIMS, New Delhi as well.

What are key factors keeping you connected with the education sector?

“Having a keen interest in teaching students and bonding with students”

I have completed my 10 years in the teaching field, I think that it is the interest in teacher-student bonding that keeps me going in this academic line. In this profession, we learn new things daily, and at the same time, we also try to keep ourselves updated with the current trends and developments. The most important factor is the respect that is earned from this profession.


What is your philosophy of leadership and how would you describe it?

“To encourage and motivate team members can achieve the desired goals”

A good leader is one who has the ability to motivate, encourage and make the team work together to achieve the goals. A good leader must always be understanding. As a Head of a Department, I can say that I can inspire, I am understanding, supportive and at the same time I have strategic thinking capabilities and know proper work ethics. I can manage and make people work as a team to achieve goals and maintain a good work environment. 


What can an inbound student gain from studying here in AIMT, Guwahati?

“We provide world-class infrastructure facilities with low fees in comparison to other institutes”

The education system is different in different countries. We have a good education system for higher studies in India. Many Indian Universities top the list of the World’s best Universities. Many students who have completed studies in India are now working in good companies at top positions. The fee structure is comparatively low in our institute. The institute is affiliated with one of the oldest Government Universities in India. AIMT has a good infrastructure, highly equipped labs, good library facility, highly qualified teachers and full-fledged proper classes are a few points that need to be mentioned about our Institute.

How does your college ensure the best practice of industry?

“By providing exposure to industrial and advanced lab visits regularly and experts visit for guest lectures”

Our institute organizes Industrial and advanced lab visits for students regularly so that the students get exposure to practical learning. Also, the institute invites experts from Industries and other related fields for Guest lectures so that students get to interact with the experts. Besides the course curriculum, students also become aware of the practical knowledge and get good exposure to learn and gain more knowledge about their subjects. 


How could your college be more welcoming to students?

“The institute treats all students equally irrespective of their religion and caste”

In our Institute, students from all races/ economic backgrounds are there. There is no differentiation created among them. A healthy learning environment is there in the Institute. Students from different states study in our Institute and equal importance is given to all. 


What are your roles and responsibilities to the college and its students?

“Providing best knowledge to the students with moral values”

As a teacher, I think my role is to give the best knowledge to the students. Along with the course knowledge, I think it is also my duty to teach the students good moral values and make them responsible citizens of our country. In this way, we can build a better tomorrow for the upcoming generation.


What do you think should be the institute’s top priority over the next 10 years?

“To provide students skill-based knowledge and prepare them for competitions”

In the coming years, we must concentrate on giving the best education to our students and focus more on practical-based study. Skill-based education is the need of the hour. Also, we must make our students industry-ready and also prepare them to face the competitive world. 


What are some of the biggest challenges for higher education in general and for your institute?

“To provide quality education along with practical education to the new generation students”

The biggest challenge is that the students of this new generation have a different mindset. So we must be more prepared to deal with the new youth. Alongwith quality education, we must prepare them and make them strong enough to face the real world.

Would you like to give any suggestions to the current youth and the aspiring students?

“The students should understand that they are the future of the nation and should learn to be independent”

The future of a nation depends on its youth. Our youths need to be more focused on skill-based education, learn proper work ethics, build good moral values, maintain emotional stability, and be emotionally strong. The younger generation must learn to think out of the box, and try to explore new ideas, be independent and never fear failure. They must always try to give their best.


How do you establish a healthy relationship and environment in your institute?

“Motivate students for taking part in cultural and social activities of the college”

A good bonding between teacher-student is necessary for learning and growth. The institute always encourages a healthy learning environment. Our institute conducts one-to-one counseling sessions and mentoring programs to guide and mentor students. In addition to this, various cultural and sports activities are conducted regularly so that students get a chance to showcase their talents.
