Dr. C. Gunasekaran has been working as the Chief Executive Officer and Professor of Vivekananda Institute of Management Studies, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. What are the key factors that keep associated with the education sector?

"My passion of spreading my knowledge and experience with youths"

I always had a passion for teaching. Even when I was working in the industry, I was part of various national-level assignments. I always keep asking myself how I can share my knowledge with others and then education looked a perfect fit to fulfill my ambition. Overall, my desire to educate students and youths with all the knowledge and experience I have is what has kept me connected with the education sector.

What is your philosophy of leadership?

"A leader knows how to utilize available resources to achieve the desired goals"

In my opinion, a good leader is always aware about his surroundings, team members, their strengths, skills and limitations. Also a leader knows how to create and execute a plan by utilizing his team skills to achieve a defined mission and vision, which is essential for their mutual growth.

When you came to this college, what was your vision for it and how are you trying to achieve the same?

"To develop this institute in such a way that it can impart better quality education"

When I visited this college for the very first time, my vision was to make Vivekananda Institute of Management Studies a frontier B-School that can impart top quality knowledge in management, develop research skills and create globally competent leaders with social consciousness. With my experience, I have constantly tried to create a learning environment by involving industry engagement for the dissemination of management knowledge to transform young minds into technically proficient, socially committed and globally competent professionals and entrepreneurs.

How do you maintain a healthy environment with your students and faculty?

At VIMS every faculty spends a decent amount of time with students, even after the lectures. They both take part in many extracurricular activities and also attend industrial visits together. We have provided such a cordial ambiance to our students that they are not hesitant to approach teachers regarding any matter. This helps both the students and teachers to convey whatever they have in mind clearly. All this creates a better teaching and learning experience for both students and teachers and ensures a healthy environment in college. 

How do you bring in a practical and industry oriented approach towards subjects?

Our college has highly qualified faculty members with great industry experience and strong research skills that helps them to guide students about areas like HR management, marketing, branding, financial plans, market surveys and others. We constantly visit industries ourselves and also conduct it for our students to gain insights of the latest industrial trends and requirements. Industry oriented certification courses (Big Data Hadoop Certification, Business Analytics Certification, Certificate in Digital Marketing, Certificate in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Certificate in ERP – Human Capital Management (SAP), Advanced Excel, Six Sigma Green Belt Professional) and regular corporate expert meets are few other approaches we use to give the idea of the real world problems to our students.

We practice outcome-based teaching and learning methodology in our college to be in sync with national and international teaching standards. We also facilitate in-house FDP series to train our faculty and students on modern teaching-learning methods involving Pedagogy (teacher centric), Andragogy (student centric) and Heutagogy (self determined learning). Additionally, we have numerous value added programs to help our students explore their passion and interests. Lastly, we have the Techno-Management Centre, which is a specialized unit to promote techno-components, tools, analytics and methods used for effective decision making and management. What valuable advice would you like to give to the students to have a prosperous career ahead? 

"Don't limit yourself to one specific area and keep upgrading yourself"

I would like to advise my students to keep growing and keep learning. Never limit yourself in any way possible and always try to gain new experience and knowledge. Also define realistic goals for yourself while you plan your future, don't get stuck in one place and keep your journey dynamic.
