Sumit Gera converted IIM Amritsar MBA with a 87.61%ile marks in CAT 2021 Examination. He graduated from Institute of Management Studies, SAGE University, Indore with a 82.70% and without any prior work experience. In this Interview, Sumit has shared his IIM Amritsar MBA Admission experience with the Collegedunia Team, read below

Collegedunia Team: What was your CAT percentile? Did you avail reservation benefits for IIM Amritsar MBA Admission?

Sumit: I scored 87.61%ile in my CAT 2021 Examination. Yes, I am from the OBC Category so I availed the reservation benefits.

Collegedunia Team: Describe your Pre MBA Academic Performance for Collegedunia readers?

Sumit: Yes, I had scored 91.20% in my 10 boards and had a decent score in 12 board exams, i.e 67.40%. Also, I had completed my graduation with 82.70%.

Collegedunia Team: Describe the general setting of your personal Interview.

Sumit: The panel consisted of 2 faculty members. There can be another moderator with his camera off just to observe your behaviours. One of them was the faculty of OB/HR domain and the other one was a subject matter expert. The interview was protracted online and it went around for 30 minutes. Overall the interview was very chill and they were motivating me alot. When they felt that I was feeling anxious they treated me as a friend and asked me to relax, calm down and answer freely without stressing much about the interview.

Pro Tips: Try to be as calm as possible. Always remember the person in front of you is willing to take you in and that's why they shortlisted you, you just have to give them one right reason to go ahead with you. 

Even if you answer 6 questions out of 10 correctly, you are all set. If you don't know any answer just say it politely and show your willingness to know the answer. Be positive throughout the process.

Collegedunia Team: Mention at least 5 questions that were asked in IIM Sirmaur Interview and how you responded to each of them?

Sumit: The questions asked during the Interview are: 

Ques 1. Tell us about yourself.

Ans. I told them basic details that included my residence, background, education, achievements and hobbies. 

Ques 2. Tell us more about your hobby. 

Ans. I mentioned a specific hobby and hence they were hooked and wanted to get into details. I explained to them a bit about the hobby but didn't get into much detail.

Ques 3. Can you please elaborate and give me some specific details about this thing (One part of my hobby)?

Ans. I answered in detail about it and they seemed quite impressed.

Ques 4. What are your favourite subjects? Name first and second choice?

Ans. I told them my preference in subjects that included Marketing and Economics.

Ques 5. He chose Economics and asked me If I'm comfortable answering the questions?

Ans. I was pretty confident and answered the question with whatever knowledge I had on the topic or subject. 

Ques 6. They asked me about some concepts of Economics.

Ans. I answered the questions as per my understanding in my own language. They seemed satisfied and continued to ask questions related to marketing and then somewhat about recent GK topics like Russia-Ukraine War, Any recent news that I read, Oil prices, etc.

Collegedunia Team: Mention any three reasons why you chose this college over other colleges which you converted.

Sumit: The three main reasons were:

I chose IIM Amritsar over other converted IIMs because of its better rankings, better average package and specifically the kind of industries that visit here are from all the domains equally (Marketing, Finance, Operations, HR, Analytics) especially the Marketing Domains.

And since I was interested in Marketing, I chose Amritsar over others.

The other colleges that I converted to were IIM Jammu (MBA Core; MBA-HA&HM),IIM Bodhgaya, IIM Sambalpur and IIM Sirmaur (MBA Core; MBA-T&HM), but I found this as better because of its location.

Collegedunia Team: What was the reason for you not converting other colleges?

Sumit: CAT 2021 was the only exam that I gave. My target was to get into one of the IIMs and to get myself associated with the brand.

I got the following interview calls: IIM Kozhikode (PGP LSM), IIM CAP, IIM Rohtak, IIM Amritsar, and, IIM Sirmaur (T&HM)

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to convert IIM Kozhikode (PGP-LSM) & IIM Rohtak. It was because I haven't given any mock interviews before the actual ones and faced them directly. I was not confident enough and there was not enough practice. 

Later when I converted the other 4 interviews, I realised that if I would have practised enough and tried to keep myself calm then I would have converted those interviews too. But I couldn't qualify.
