Dr. Subhabrata Ganguly has been working as the Principal of The Bhawanipur Education Society College, Kolkata, West Bengal. He has done B. Sc., M. Sc. and PhD and M. Phil as part of his academics.
Being the Principal of Bhawanipur Education Society College, what are your responsibilities towards the students?
As a Principal, the scope of my responsibilities is very dynamic and vast and I am primarily responsible for representing our college in different conferences, providing academic support to students, attending Faculty and departmental meetings and voicing concerns or providing suggestions for improvement, guiding, leading and mentoring students in research projects. In addition to this, developing best professional skills in students, evaluating, monitoring and mentoring students academically and non-academically, innovating and implementing career-enhancement programs and activities in college, supervising and supporting teaching assistants, serving functional activities of departmental committees, assessing, reviewing and evaluating students activities and progress also comes under the scope of my day to day work. And I am always reachable on my phone and email to ensure I remain in sync with everyone all the time.
What do you see as your college’s greatest strengths and how it can be enhanced?
The biggest strength of our institute is its own mission and vision. And we are committed to establishing a good education system, recruiting excellent trainers to teach students and developing the best environment where every student can grow equally on both personal and professional fronts. And I believe in order to enhance this strength, we all should believe in our capabilities and work dedicatedly with enthusiasm to fulfill our goals.
What approaches do you bring in apart from curriculum to teach the students?
Our teachers use a diverse range of methods and teaching techniques to deliver lectures and educate students about various topics. And in the process firstly they try to find out students' strengths, weaknesses, aspirations and passion areas so that they can customize their way of delivering content. They also follow the concept of explicit instruction to focus on frequent questioning and guided practice to help students learn a topic in depth.

How does your college enhance the faculty's skills and prepare them in accordance with industry standards?
All the faculty members of our college are highly educated and experienced in their respective fields, but with changing technologies and educational trends they also need to develop their core competencies and enhance their skills. Hence to up-skill them, our college regularly organizes Faculty Development Programs and customized training sessions to upgrade their soft skills, counseling skills, interpersonal skills and lifelong learning skills.
When you joined this Institute, what was your vision for it and how are you trying to achieve the same?
My objective when I joined this amazing institute was to educate students, help them become successful and make them an ethically and mentally strong individuals along with being an effective problem-solvers and life-long learners who can contribute positively to the economic well-being of our region and nation and who are prepared to tackle complex challenges of this ever changing world. And to make my aim true, I am continuously following the concept of summative and formative assessment.
What challenges are you facing in uplifting the education quality of your college?
The biggest challenge in front of us is that our students find it difficult to recognize the difference between learning and accepting. Because from their childhood itself, they have been taught that marks are more important and that's why they study just for the sake of good marks and are unable to retain the information for a longer period of time. So to bridge this gap and educate such students in the right way is a challenge we need to address on an earliest basis.

How do you strategize and update the curriculum to make it befitting for the students?
We design and update the curriculum of our college by following the approach of formative and summative assessment and taking detailed feedback from students. This helps us to not only redesign the syllabus of subjects but also help us in improving our teaching techniques. Apart from this, we also analyze the output we want to achieve at the end and skills we want to inculcate in our students.
