Dr Esar Ahmad has been working as the Head of Civil Engineering Department at Mewar University, Chittorgarh, Rajasthan. He has done B. Tech in Civil Engineering from RTU of Kota, M. Tech in Structural Engineering from Jamia Millia Islamia as part of his academics. His areas of interest are Design of Concrete Structure, Earthquake Engineering and Structural Engineering and had 6 years of teaching experience. Also he has published 3 research papers in national journals.

As we all are aware that with the dynamic and ever changing nature of the outside world, competition is increasing in every field. Hence to make our students ready for the outside competitive world, we organize technical fests on a regular basis in our college. And during my lecture, I use real time projects, case studies and experiments data as an example so that my students can easily relate the theoretical concepts with the real world. Last but not the least, case studies, individual and group projects are also assigned by us to students so that they can conduct thorough research and find innovative solutions for real world issues.

The domain of Civil Engineering basically deals with the construction and redevelopment of various types of architectural projects including, bridges, roads, railways, monuments and other commercial and privatized buildings and it is also one of the most important sectors when it comes to nation-building and enhancement of infrastructure. Also with growing urbanization, day by day scope of Civil Engineering in the government and private sectors is advancing to a great extent and limitless job opportunities are being created for the youths. So, I would say associated job opportunities and growing urbanization are the main factors which makes our courses a best fit and worth pursuing for students.
What would you say are the best practices of courses your University is offering to students?

We have adopted the two-way teaching methodology to help our students understand the concepts in a deeper and clearer way. And our main objective is to provide practical learning experience and exposure to students, for which we ensure that whenever students conduct experiments we stay with them so that we can guide them accordingly. Apart from this, we regularly encourage our students to present their learning and research through assignments, charts and PowerPoint presentations.

How do you maintain a good relationship with your students and fellow faculties?

I firmly believe that trust is an important factor to have a cordial relationship between faculty and their students. And if I talk about approaches we use, so we mentor our students in the right direction, solve their problems and academic issues on time and go an extra mile to provide additional knowledge and skills to them. Apart from teaching, our faculty members also collaborate with students for research activities and we ensure that the students feel connected and comfortable while interacting with their respective faculty.
How do you establish a link between your University courses and industry demands?

For the purpose of maintaining a connection between our institute courses and corporate sector requirements, we regularly assign real-life projects to our students so that they can implement their learnings and build new skills as well throughout the process. In addition to this, our college organizes expert sessions and customized training programs by inviting industry experts to share their knowledge and experience with us. And our University has distinct industry immersion programs for students such as industrial visits, site visits, projects in collaboration with industry and short term training of 45 days. Lastly, we provide 6 months internships to students to give them an opportunity to grow professionally, identify their personal strengths and weaknesses, apply learned theory to practical situations and gain an appreciation for responsibilities pertaining to the work.

Which career options would be available for students after pursuing courses from your college?

From my experience, I can confirm that a wide variety of options would be available for students after completing Diploma and Graduation in Civil Engineering and students can either go for higher studies or they can opt for a full time job as a Civil Engineer. From higher studies perspective, students can pursue Master's or PhD Degrees in their respective areas and from jobs perspective, they can work in public sector undertakings like BHEL, HAL, NTPC, ONGC, GAIL, IOCL, SAIL, ISRO, and BSNL. Apart from this, Municipal Corporations and different Government Engineering Departments also recruit Civil Engineers for various profiles. Lastly, fields like Coastal Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Earthquake Engineering, Construction Engineering, Forensic Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Structural Engineering, Surveying, Transportation Engineering, Municipal or Urban Engineering and Water Resource Engineering fields have abundant job scopes for Civil Engineers.
