Dr. Ratna Saxena is the Vice-Principal and Head of the Zoology department at Kanoria PG Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Jaipur. She has completed an M.Sc and a Ph.D. in Zoology. Her area of specialization is Cell and molecular biology. She has many research papers published in international journals and has experience of 31 years of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate classes.

Every educator is driven by the feeling that his efforts today will play an important role in shaping the future. Our students today should be good enough to become leaders of tomorrow in their respective fields. I feel honored to contribute to their growth. Teaching is my passion and my main focus has been to be in contact with young students and impart them quality education.

What is the scope of zoology in India?

Zoology is a very interesting subject when it comes to biological sciences. A zoologist has comprehensive knowledge of animal sciences and competency to perform the lab techniques. They have excellent opportunities for fieldwork along with new avenues in the field of academics, agricultural, environmental or pharmaceutical industry.The program is designed in such a way that the student at completion understands the basic concepts of cell biology, invertebrates, taxonomy, physiology and any such similar or specific fields of zoology.

To reach the apex in the field of zoology when should a student start preparing?

“Students must start gaining the domain knowledge of zoology from the very start of high school”

In my opinion, the student should be focused from the very beginning. Students should start focusing on various domains from high school itself. Then only start to progress upwards while in the graduation with the combination of botany/zoology and chemistry, as these are the classic combinations. Later as per the interest in subjects, one should opt for post-graduation.

How zoology will help students in their career after completing formal education in this subject?

Zoology has applications in a wide variety of fields. If a student develops an interest in the subject then he or she can become a scientist and pursue research. Apart from being a scientist, students can also gain employment in the biotechnology and the medical field. Graduates of this field can also join pharmaceutical companies, as they possess good knowledge of biological sciences. An option of going for higher studies is also open for students.

  • The zoology department at Kanoria College is almost 50 years old and we have always had a tradition of having well-qualified faculty in our department. 
  • Initially, we only had the UG programs but later got upgraded to PG department also. 
  • We have well-furnished and well-equipped labs.
  • We have got 3 labs separate for both UG and PG classes and with that, we have got all the facilities to perform all sorts of experiments.
