SVIMCS Kolkata

Being a dignitary of the Swami Vivekananda Institute of Management and Computer Science, what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

At the onset I would like to mention that at Swami Vivekananda Institute of management and Computer Science (SVIMCS), our students are considered as our stakeholders and part of our extended family. We work as a family where students, faculties and other staff are all part of the system and all our success or failure are interdependent. As a part of this esteemed student centric Institute, I play a dual role of a teacher and a mentor. Being a teacher my role is to guide students learn by imparting knowledge to them and by setting up a situation in which students can and will learn effectively. Some of the responsibilities as a mentor are: to provide guidance, advice, feedback and support to the mentee (students). As well as serving as their role model, teacher, counselor, advisor, sponsor, advocate and ally. My job is to provide them with all their tools to be able to become a better version of themselves.

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

"As an old proverb says “One hand cannot clap”, so to bring success in an organization we require teamwork and harmony"

One of the most important needs for learning is student participation. Everything else is useless without a focused mind, regardless of how skilfully the technology is used or how effective the teaching methods are. And one of the useful ways to make improvements here is by having a strong relationship with our students. A well-organized classroom with engaged students who trust and feel valued by the teacher is a classroom that’s set up for progress everywhere else. Some of the ways by which I engage with my students are: Know their Stories, Talk to students, assume the best in every student, attend their extracurricular events, explicitly value the child over the content.

Few ways I employ to achieve them are: Trust is the building block and makes my relationship with fellow faculties sustainable. So trust-building will give us great results. I try to bridge the relationship with trust to sustain it. Merge any gap with communication. Always try to be friendly and respect my fellow faculties.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and make it industry oriented?

"It's fundamental to train students an amalgamation of academic and practical skills to produce employable graduates"

An industry-focused education that emphasises both academic and practical skills has several advantages. For one, graduates have a clear competitive advantage when they apply for jobs. Second, both students and teachers find this method to be enjoyable. Fun is a key component of motivation, according to research. We do numerous things to confirm the industry focus. In addition to keeping up with current trends and technologies and executing these into the daily classes, we invite smart people from the industry to do workshops with our students and teaching staff. By doing so, we get fresh ideas and inspiration and an insight into current practices that we can bring into the classroom. Lastly, in their third semester (which is one and a half years into the course), the students do a mandatory 6 - 12-week internship, which is something that prepares them for the future in areas that we as an educational institution cannot.

How do you strategize the curriculum and how often it gets updated to make it befitting for the students?

We are affiliated to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, which is a State aided University accredited to NAAC. Our curriculum is mainly designed by the University, which forms the main framework of our theoretical lectures. MAKAUT is the only technological university in our state which is very progressive in their outlook. Syllabus often gets restructured as per the industry need and new modules get added to make it more enriched. However apart from the prescribed syllabus we at SVIMCS also had an academic and research council as a part of IQAC. The functions of these bodies are to arrange meetings for upgrading the skills of the students by engaging them in any value addition program apart from the syllabus as per the industry requirement.

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

"Do not be a follower. Avoid being part of the crowd"

Without being a loner, you can separate yourself from the group of people who are not involved in positive things and still have a social life. Avoid following popular trends that could lead to a high-risk lifestyle, such as becoming so obsessed with materialism that you will do illegal activities to obtain certain things. Try to remain updated with the world.
