How do you strategize the curriculum and how often it gets updated to make it befitting for the students?
“We ensure to provide experiential learning”
The curriculum of the program is largely governed by the RTU, Kota which periodically reviews and revises the same. In addition, the department administers various professional cubs, expert lectures and related activities to fulfill the curriculum gaps.
What are the best practices offered by the Mechanical department to the students which will help them to gain necessary skills?
“We make sure to follow the current industry trends to bring in the best quality education”
The department has developed its facilities in such a way that students can do self-study and undertake extra and co-curricular activities for their holistic growth.
In the Production Engineering Laboratory and Workshop, the department has a wide variety of machine tools. An e-Yantra Embedded System and Robotics Laboratory have been developed in collaboration with IIT Bombay and MHRD under the National Mission on Education through the Government of India's ICT program. Similarly, state-of-the-art Thermal Engineering and I.C.Engine Laboratory exist in the department, which encompasses variable compression ratio automatic engines, multistage axial-flow compressor, EGR system, and Gas analyzers.
To foster leadership and professional skills in the students, the department has an active student section of the Society for Automotive Engineers India (SAE-INDIA), Renewable Energy Club, and Robotics club. What are the challenges you face to uplift the quality of education of your department?
“There is lack of professional skills in the students”
Students' communication and soft skills admitted in the program are inadequate to match professional course requirements. It is also aggravated by the fact that knowledge of mathematics and the first basic sciences principles often lack in the students admitted in the program. The lack of insufficient funds compared to Govt. funded institutions can be attributed as another reason that hinders the quality of education in the department.
What is the future scope of Mechanical Engineering from your institution?
“We make sure that the students learn and prosper”
The department of Mechanical Engineering at SKIT envisages a high demand and opportunities for capable mechanical engineers in the coming decade. The government has already envisioned various flagship projects, namely ‘Make-in-India,’ ‘Skill India,’ ‘Vocal for Local,’ etc., which will boost the fresh mechanical graduates. Moreover, with the growing intervention of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and cloud computing in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), the knowledge of core mechanical engineers to effectively incorporate these technologies in the consumer goods and services will surely increase.
What goals do you have for your department for the next 5 years?
“Our aim is to excel in each vertical wherever we step in”
In the next five years, the department primarily aims to produce capable mechanical engineers with the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The department targets all graduating students as responsible citizens, competent leaders, good team workers, good human beings, and ethical engineers in society. Traditional mechanical engineers with inadequate software competency may not be able to cope up in the coming times. Therefore, the department will devise means and mechanisms to train its students to meet the growing demand and expectation of mechanical engineers with proficiency in software development, artificial intelligence, mechatronics, etc., in the current scenario.
Tell us about your experience in the field of Engineering Education and what makes it the best industry to work in?
