Dr.D. Padma Subramanian is the Principal of Sri Muthukumaran Institute of Technology. She has more than 25 years of experience put together in fields of teaching, administration, research and industry. In this interview she talks about her way of receiving situations and how she as a leader brings a different perspective to it. She mentions the strategy of the institute in developing the curriculum and how the programs are peculiarly strategised. Moreover, why it is important to integrate the gap between industrial knowledge and institutional knowledge, and how the institute emphasises on giving industry relevant exposure. Additionally, she highlights that the institute appreciates university in diversity as many of the students who come to pursue education are from underprivileged backgrounds. In the later segment she highlights the unknown and undiscovered facts which people are unaware of our institute. On a concluding note, she appreciates the efforts of the people working for the institute and terms them as the backbone of the institute.

Devising institutional practices and reflecting and effective approach via decentralization and participative management

I believe in reflecting the pattern of an effective leadership and devising Institutional practices based on decentralization with thrust on self-regulated responsibilities and participative management approach. Decisions taken by the Governing Council are implemented under the leadership of the Principal. The Principal is assisted in the implementations of decisions by various committees, cells, HoDs and unit officers. All decisions pertaining to academic, curricular and co-curricular activities are planned prior and disseminated through academic calendar.With an objective of nurturing leadership qualities and participatory spirit among students an active student council is functioning in the college. Students are given the opportunity to contribute towards Institute building by allocating active student roles in all the academic/administrative bodies/ committees of the Institution. The process of quality assurance strategies is implemented through the formation of Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC).The Principal as Chairperson of (IQAC) extends a participatory approach for performance evaluation, assessment, and record keeping exercise to enhance quality in all the academic activities with a view of achieving academic excellence.

Sri Muthukumaran Institute of Technology is situated in a sprawling campus of 15.76 Acres which is at a distance of 15km from Chennai central, 10km from Meenambakkam airport and 10km from Koyambedu bus terminus. The Institute is thus well connected by air, bus and railway routes.

We put a lot of emphasis on giving industry relevant exposure to the students 

The College follows the curriculum and syllabi prescribed by Anna University. Industry relevant electives are encouraged to be the preferred electives. Apart from the above, we are conducting Industrial visits, In plant trainings, Internships, workshops/seminars, extension and outreach Programs in collaboration with Industry, number of futuristic MoUs are signed with Industries, linking of Industry with Research/Project work by involving the Industries for data collection and experimental work by our students/research scholars. Many Industry- oriented Programs are conducted which imparts the skills needed for moulding as employable graduates as part of implementing Industry Academia Innovative practices.

There is an active Student Council functioning in SMIT. Through the forum of the Student Council, ample opportunities are provided to students in the academic and administrative decision making process of the Institution. This gives a forum to the students to nurture their leadership qualities, organizational behavior and also gives a provision to the academic and administrative system to expeditely resolve any matter of conflict arising among the student’s level.

There are many unknown and undiscovered facts which people are unaware of our institute

There are many unsaid and unexplored domains where people have not known us completely. They are still in a dubious position and unknown of many facts about our college. SMIT is a niche college under the educational hub Sri Muthukumaran Educational Trust, which is a major service provider in various streams of education having had a glorious existence for the past 35 years. We are a flagship engineering college having 25 years of illustrious legacy and produces many Anna University rank holders every year 

Our institute has proudly produced 20 batches of engineers comprising approximately 10,000 in numbers who are assuming top notch positions in various Industries/Organizations all over the Globe. We have bagged Gold in the AICTE-CII survey 2018, and we have active participation in the Institute Innovation Cell (IIC) under MHRD. Also, we are running 19 sectors of skill development program under PMKVY. We have one RPS, One International Conference assistance, one scheme under PRERANA and one scheme under DVP sanctioned in the year 2017 under AQIS

Our students, faculty and staff, campus forms the backbone of the institute

Sri Muthukumaran Institute of Technology is located in Chikkarayapuram - an educationally backward village near Mangadu. Most of the people in this area belong to the SC/ ST/ BC/ MBC caste category with income below average level. Our College, by way of imparting quality engineering education, has got the tremendous scope of bringing societal transformation to this particularly underprivileged village.

Also, we have separate and spacious blocks for individual departments to provide academic autonomy and provision for exclusive functioning in the various courses offered by the Departments. The enthusiastic and motivated student community in SMIT provides ample opportunity for student centered learning and academic excellence.
