Dr. R. Prabhu has been working as the Principal of Sree Sakthi Engineering College, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He has done BE from Madras University, ME from Annamalai University, PhD from SCSVMV university followed by PGDPM & IR, F.I.E., C.Eng. as part of his academics. He has an amazing 23 years of teaching and industry experience. He has published 15+ research papers on his specialization of mechanical and production engineering. He has also received “innovative technological research and dedicated principal” award from “Engineering Today-Incorporated” Malaysia. He also owns a research patent.

What is your philosophy of leadership? 

"True leadership is all about ensuring everyone in decision making process"

I firmly believe that a true leader is one who can interact in the best possible way with teachers and students’ parents and can also act as a communication bridge between them. And being the Principal, my role is to ensure the best quality education and facilities for students in the college, hence I involve every stakeholder including students and teachers while making any big decision for college. 

How do you establish a healthy relationship with students in your college?

"By connecting with them on an individual and regular basis"

To maintain cordial relationships with the students, I regularly interact with my students, encourage them to try new things and do hands-on practice to make concepts more clear. In addition to this, I also organize frequent interaction sessions and events like conferences through which we make our students more confident, help them to enhance their skills. Because I believe when students feel valued, appreciated and are listened to properly, relations between them and their teacher become stronger day by day. 

What do you think should be the college's top priority over the next 10 years?

"It should be to upgrade the educational practices of our institute"

In my opinion, we should focus more on enhancing the education quality of our college in accordance with students needs and changing technology. In addition to this, bringing best learning and research opportunities in college for the benefit of students should also be one of our objectives for upcoming years.

How do you introduce a practical and industry oriented approach towards subjects?

"By promoting the ambiance of research and development in college"

In my opinion, providing practical and industry driven experience and exposure to students is very important these days with the changing digital world and something new coming in the technology field everyday. Hence, to enforce this approach in my college, I promote the culture of research and innovation here and provide my full support and guidance to students as and when required. And I also encourage them to work on real time projects to help them utilize their existing skills, build new ones and stay updated with industrial latest requirements.

What are some plans that you have designed for students of your institute?

"We are planning to implement the advanced teaching-learning methodologies"

We have designed the curriculum of our college by analyzing the requirements of students and the industrial world, and hence the learning approach which this curriculum offers has 3 major stages including understanding the concepts, remembering the concepts followed by analyzing and evaluating the concepts. Because our main objective is to upgrade students' base knowledge and prepare them for the outside competitive world instead of enhancing their rotting skills. In addition to following this process, we conduct hands on training and internships to help students excel in their respective areas.

Which extracurricular activities are organized in college to enhance the skills of students?

"Various kinds of sports activities and NSS activities are arranged by us"

We firmly believe that extra-curricular activities are very important for the all around development of students. Hence to strengthen students' technical skills, we have value-added courses in the curriculum. And with respect to extra activities, we regularly organize sports and NSS activities, national and international events and conferences on a regular basis to bring out hidden talents of students. We also encourage them to participate in inter-college events and NHRD programs.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

"My passion of educating students and making them future ready has kept me connected"

After finishing my Bachelor's, I worked for 2 years in a private firm, but the satisfaction which I wanted to get was somewhat missing there, so I thought of joining the education sector as I always had the passion to teach students and youths. And the challenges in addition to amazing learning and networking opportunities associated with this sector makes it worth joining and by educating students, not only you grow, but you get to directly contribute in society and nation growth. So I would say my passion for teaching, satisfaction and happiness which I have received here have kept me intacted in this field.

What challenges are you facing to uplift the education quality of your college?

"Unavailability of good sources to update syllabus of various courses is a big challenge"

We are facing different kinds of challenges at different levels and the most prominent one is the lack of a good network and people due to which it becomes difficult to prepare and manage the syllabus of various subjects, but I would say digital media has made things a lot easier for us. And the internet is only helpful when you use it the right way, but because of the fact that 70% of the college students use it for enjoyment and only 30% of them use it to grab good information. So my request from all students is to make good use of internet facilities instead of mindlessly scrolling things.

What valuable advice would you like to give to the students for a prosperous career ahead?

"Keep participating in technical conferences and symposiums, try to add creativity in your work"

I would suggest to my dear students to participate in inter and intra college events including symposium, conference and paper presentation, because it will help them to learn more about technology, give them a platform to showcase their skills and will also keep them updated with latest trends and developments. Be more creative and innovative while presenting solutions for any real time problems because simply studying the concept from social media and YouTube will not help them much due to less creativity in their ideas and presentation.
